GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Tax Manager leads a team responsible for both direct and indirect taxes including quarterly and year-end tax provisions, tax returns and related work papers, estimated tax payments, extensions, tax planning, audit support and various tax projects and research.
**This position sits in Des Moines, IA and would work a hybrid, in office schedule**
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supports Senior Tax Manager to lead and direct strategic improvements for key processes within Tax.
- Manages tax workflows by applying knowledge acquired through successful interpretation of new and existing tax laws, legislation and court cases, rulings and pronouncements, industry tax seminars, study groups, continuing education and networking.
- Facilitates accurate and timely information regarding tax liabilities for financial reporting on both STAT and GAAP basis.
- Reviews quarterly tax account reconciliations.
- Coordinates between various internal/external parties and service providers.
- Manages all direct and indirect tax compliance filings.
- Provides tax planning and review of complex income tax returns.
- Identifies and mitigates tax risks.
- Responds to notices and audits requests; assist with management and coordination of tax audits.
- Leads a diverse team of employees with responsibility for managing the employee life cycle and experience, including but not limited to, selection and retention of talent, continuous feedback and performance management, reward and recognition, corrective action and employee development.
- Performs other related work as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other related field of study; plus a minimum of 6 years of related experience in the financial services industry; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Prior experience in public accounting and statutory accounting experience preferred.
- Extensive experience working with and understanding the tax code.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Technical and operational knowledge of applicable federal and state tax laws, rules and regulations in the insurance/fixed income annuity industry.
- Ability to perform technical tax research using multiple resources.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
- Advanced mathematical skills and strong attention to detail.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Strong organizational and planning skills with ability to meet regulatory deadlines.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents from regulatory agencies, and other members of the business community.
- Strong problem-solving skills with ability to define practical problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to work cooperatively and successfully with employees, customers, and other outside third parties.
- Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
- Travel is not required in this position.
