Title: Benefits Specialist – Leave of Absence

Location: Ashburn, VA Hybrid

Job Summary

The Benefits Analyst – Leave of Absence is responsible for supporting managers and employees regarding leave administration activities including supporting leave of absence and return to work, life-cycle transactions associated with FMLA, ADA, PFL, STD, LTD, ADA and Workers Compensation. The main area of responsibility is to serve as a resource to management and employees in solving day-to-day workplace matters.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Administers and coordinates family and medical leave, family illness requests, absences, activities, and requests for all employees, ensuring fairness and consistency of policy and practice.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for managers, employees, HR, and payroll throughout the leave management process.
  • Provides consultation to managers on policies and compliance regarding leave of absence matters, and compliance with all related policies, employment and leave laws.
  • Coordinates FML with other forms of leave including Worker’s Compensation, STD, and PTO.
  • Manages and collaborates with 3rd party leave and Workers’ Compensation vendor.
  • Advocates for employees on leave to ensure a successful return to work.
  • Creates and reviews dashboard metrics to optimize efficiency and ensure work is completed timely.
  • Monitors usage within leave programs notifying manager when trend may be apparent. Suggests ideas to help reduce leave frequency and duration and expedite return to work.
  • Provides reports to HR and COE’s to be used in solving people related business challenges and implementing HR strategy.
  • Participates on Human Resources and/or company-wide project teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR or related field; equivalent experience considered in lieu of degree.
  • 4 + years of experience in leave of absence administration
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to communicate with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to influence others on policies, practices, and procedure.
  • Effective at capturing and synthesizing information from multiple parties
  • Solid and hands-on understanding of leave laws
  • Ability to handle sensitive and highly personal information daily and maintain confidentiality in a mature and insightful manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and experience with case management preferred.

Security Requirements/Background Investigation Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident.
  • Favorable credit check for all cleared positions 
  • Successfully passing a background investigation including drug screening.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Standing/Walking/Mobility:  Must have mobility to attend meetings with other managers and employees. Standing for prolonged and extended periods of time.
  • Climbing/Stooping/Kneeling:  0% - 10% of the time.
  • Lifting/Pulling/Pushing:  0% - 10% of the time.
  • Fingering/Grasping/Feeling:  Must be able to write, type and use a telephone system 100% of the time.
  • Sitting:  Sitting for prolonged and extended periods of time.
