Position Summary

Energy Transport and Delivery Modeling (ETDM) is a part of the Modeling and Analytics department of Integrated Systems Planning (ISP), an industry-leading approach to designing Xcel’s future energy system. To meet Xcel’s goal of a carbon-free system by 2050, Modeling and Analytics provides the data and evaluations needed to develop transmission, generation, distribution, and gas systems.

ETDM focuses on transmission system modeling and power system analysis, including steady state and transient analysis, as well as ensuring compliance with reliability standards. The group also endeavors to streamline and automate study approaches.

This Internship will be working out of Minneapolis, MN or Denver, CO and will be part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer. The ideal start date for this position is May 1, 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the ETDM engineers to automate a study process (e.g. capacitor switching studies). This will require understanding the study steps, learning how to interface with software programs, and sharing the outputs.

  • Assist ETDM engineers with general study work, including model updates, verifying inputs, and reviewing outputs.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering program, studying areas such as electrical, mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering or related.

  • Electrical engineering – circuits knowledge at a minimum. Completion of a power systems introductory course would be a plus.

  • Introductory programming skills (e.g. Python, Matlab, C++)

  • Any completion of energy systems courses (renewable energy, etc.) would be a plus.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.70 to $30.10 per hour
