Manager, Environmental Affairs (13 Month Contract)

The role supports and assists to maintain and communicate environmental compliance programs to ensure all operating sectors of the business are compliant with Company policies and applicable legislation, limiting reputational and financial impacts. The role is key in assisting with environmental emergency response activities.

Part of the role is also to contribute to manage waste management programs’ execution, drive performance, execute data collection, review and consolidation, as well as engaging nationally with waste vendors through coordination of services and contract development activities.

Skills:

The position requires a University Degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management with 5-7 years of experience in the discipline.

  • Highly skilled in the fields of environmental compliance, sustainability and project management.
  • Ability to write concisely and clearly in both informal and formal applications.
  • Effective oral communications skills, with focus on educating, leading and influencing others internally and externally.
  • Capacity to work cross functionally with teams of multi-level stakeholder groups.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking capabilities.
  • Demonstrated skills in communication and critical thinking to assist during emergency situations.
  • Work effectively autonomously, in traditional and non-traditional workplace settings.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Suite of Programs, including Excel skills to manage large databases.
  • Bilingual in French is an asset

Tasks

1-Manage the maintenance and execution of Environmental Compliance Programs

  • Develop, review and update of environmental procedures and training documents.
    • Remain abreast of regulatory updates by reviewing regulations.
    • Prepare annual material & templates for use, ensuring any required updates are captured.
  • Support the business units with execution and compliance with the programs.
    • Provide support for interpretation and application of the procedures for site specific conditions or situations.
    • Facilitate the communication of compliance requirements.
  • Participate in the facilitation of compliance audits for effective execution.
  • Manage waste audit program execution with external consulting services for the completion of regulated waste audits in Ontario, and nationally where needed, on an annual basis.
    • Utilize results to drive awareness of waste management activities, training initiatives and service changes to improve performance.
  • Report on results to audited facilities.
  • Maintain records for all environmental documents (procedures, regulatory updates, environmental emergencies, communications, risk register, government interaction register, data bases). This includes Environmental Management System Manual, online portal and digital documents available through intranet website.
  • Prepare, review and update environmental compliance and performance reports.

2- Assist with environmental emergency response activities.

  • Assist business units during an environmental emergency to ensure regulatory reporting requirements have been met and timely deployment of effective clean-up efforts. 
  • Verify that all actions taken during incident response were properly and thoroughly carried out.
  • Escalate to Director critical incidents that require additional attention and expertise.
  • Escalate incident response to appropriate stakeholders, as required.
  • Provide support to colleagues completing environmental incident reports.
  • Receive, review and file environmental incident reports to maintain incident register including tracking costs.
  • Prepare teams in the event of interactions with authorities and provide support in developing a response to government officials.
  • Is involved in the annual review of the Environmental Emergency Plans (E2 Plans)
  • Availability to respond to incidents to support Team including incident response outside of business hours.

3Manage retail waste and recycling services performance and compliance

  • Interact with Maintenance and Enterprise Procurement Teams to support the contract execution for compliance and alignment with scope and budget/revenues for the category and with operations.
  • Maintain relationships with waste service vendors and manage their performance and compliance with the contracts, business needs and demands.
  • Review vendor processes to ensure Loblaw waste material is properly managed and is aligned with expectations and in compliance.
  • Manage recycling initiatives based on regional regulatory requirements and infrastructures, maintaining effective communication internally and externally.
  • Identify opportunities to further waste diversion activities as it relates to the food waste, plastic and cardboard.
  • Remain abreast to major equipment upgrades or needs, and work with the required teams to ensure they are properly addressed.
  • Serve as a resource to stores and supply chain operations for any questions or concerns related to vendor relationships, data analysis or access to data.
  • Communicate waste management performance and activities for internal and external requests.
  • Receive waste vendors waste data information, participate to review and manage consolidation processes for ESG reporting..
