Senior Associate, Sustainability

Job Description:

 

HITT is seeking a Senior Sustainable Construction Associate to provide management to green building projects and leadership in corporate sustainability initiatives. The Senior Sustainable Construction Associate’s primary role is to work closely with operations and design teams to support, manage, and submit LEED project documentation. This position also includes expertise in conducting Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), utilizing the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), and performing embodied carbon assessments to drive sustainability outcomes. This position leverages best practices to effectively impact their function, works on projects of varying scope, and plans and accomplishes assigned projects and goals. The Senior Associate executes department goals and acts as a subject matter expert (SME) on related tools, resources, or systems.

This role will also be responsible for mentoring and supervising others, including orienting and training team members as needed and educating and engaging others in sustainable project execution—both internal and external to HITT. Additional tasks include helping to support internal HITT tool and resource development, as well as corporate sustainability projects and initiatives. The position reports to the Director of Sustainable Construction.

Candidates must embody the entrepreneurial spirit, challenge themselves to exceed expectations, and embrace tools and technologies to innovate in sustainable construction. The ideal candidate is a self-starter and strong project manager, detail-oriented, organized, high-performing, and possesses excellent interpersonal skills. Key to this position is the ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead teams effectively across all levels of the organization, fostering collaboration and clear communication.

  • Mentor and support junior team members, providing guidance and promoting their professional growth.

  • Review product submittals, document compliance, complete calculations, and develop and submit documentation for green building codes and third-party certifications such as LEED.

  • Act as HITT’s liaison to external LEED facilitator on projects, attending progress meetings as required.

  • Participate in key construction progress meetings to ensure timely access to information and to report sustainability tracking efforts as needed.

  • Manage and prioritize multiple deliverables, drive the schedule on functional projects, and perform tasks of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex issues and identify areas of opportunity where efficiencies may be made.

  • Actively pursue technical knowledge related to all aspects of green building rating systems, sustainable construction approaches, environmental management, etc.

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external project teams to execute projects, programs, and solve green building-related project issues.

  • Leverage expertise in Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), and embodied carbon assessments to support and improve project decision-making and sustainability outcomes.

  • Take initiative in resolving complex project challenges, applying creative problem-solving to drive outcomes.

  • Display a positive attitude and a collaborative mindset that inspires trust and high performance within teams.

  • Educate project teams and subcontractors on green building requirements and execution.

  • Support and contribute to HITT’s community outreach efforts and uphold ethical standards in all interactions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field (Construction Management, Business, Marketing, Sustainability, etc.).

  • Current LEED AP BD&C or ID&C accreditation preferred but not required.

  • 3-5 years managing LEED CI, LEED NC, and DC Green Code projects. Experience with LEED v4, WELL, LBC, Net Zero Energy, and other third-party rating systems is highly preferred.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) field preferred.

  • Demonstrated expertise in Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), the Embodied Carbon in Construction Calculator (EC3), and embodied carbon assessments.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-starter comfortable working with limited supervision.

  • Proven leadership capabilities, including mentoring junior team members and contributing to their growth.

  • Confidence leading teams and collaborating with all levels within an organization.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Creative thinker with a positive can-do attitude.

  • Demonstrated strengths in problem solving and project management
