With more than 200,000 developers building on our API and over 5,000 paying customers, AssemblyAI is helping unlock and support the next generation of powerful, meaningful products built with AI.

Progress in AI is moving at an unprecedented pace– and our team is made up of experts in AI research that are focused on making sure that our customers are able to stay on the cutting edge, with production-ready AI models that are constantly updating and improving as our team continues to improve accuracy, latency, and what’s possible with Speech AI. Our models consistently rank highest in industry benchmarks for accuracy, outperforming models from Google and Amazon, and up to 30% fewer hallucinations than OpenAI’s Whisper. Our models power more than 2 billion end-user experiences each day, helping companies better understand customer feedback, run more productive meetings with automated meeting notes, and helping improve childhood literacy via ed tech tools.

We’ve raised funding by leading investors including Accel, Insight Partners, Y Combinator’s AI Fund, Patrick and John Collision, Nat Friedman, and Daniel Gross. We’re a remote team looking to build one of the next great AI companies, and are looking for driven, talented people to help us get there!

About the role

AssemblyAI is growing quickly and on the forefront of innovation in the Speech AI space, and needs a leader to help us take that momentum and craft it into an external story to grow awareness of and interest in what we’re building.

As our Head of Communications, you’ll be responsible for building our communications strategy from the ground up, including PR, AR, and thought leadership, and build engaging programs across internal and external comms, social, and content to bring our narrative, values, and customers’ stories to life. Reporting to the VP of Marketing, this role will be a key leader on the marketing team, partner closely with our executive team to build out our bench of internal speakers, and help us build the Speech AI category.

What you will do:

  • Define and drive global PR, content, and communication strategies that are aligned with marketing & growth objectives and the overall company mission
  • Partner with our CEO and Executive Team to develop and execute an executive communications strategy, leveraging and shaping content plans based on AI industry trends, company innovation, and growth goals.
  • Help define AssemblyAI’s voice and tone, oversee non-technical content strategy, and partner closely with our Developer Relations team to ensure a cohesive strategy across technical and non-technical content.
  • Define a clear social strategy, take full ownership of LinkedIn as a corporate comms channel, and partner with the rest of the marketing team on comms strategies across social channels.
  • Provide strategic guidance to executives, leaders, and agency partners on identifying and engaging at events, and with media, analysts, and influencers
  • Lead the identification, development, pitching and placement of AssemblyAI related stories in top tier business, consumer and financial media worldwide, in print, digital and broadcast outlets
  • Partner with product marketing and tech teams to amplify new product launches and model releases
  • Manage 1 content marketer and build out future hiring plans for your function as needed

What you’ll need:

  • Corporate communications/public relations experience (7-10+ years) in a high growth B2B companies (experience with AI products a plus)
  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable reviewing and analyzing business performance metrics, KPIs, and budgets to maximize effectiveness. Proven ability to build communications and content plans to support business goals
  • Experience building and leading teams, but a desire and ability to work small and scrappy. You’re a senior lead who can build for the future but can roll their sleeves up and do the work themselves
  • Outstanding story telling, writing skills and editing skills
  • Strong executive presence and experience working as an advisor to senior leaders
  • Passionate about working in AI, with an excitement to build strategies and programs in a space without a proven playbook
  • Proven leadership experience across marketing teams - you’ve helped create processes across marketing sub-teams and see yourself as an overall marketing leader, not just a leader of your specific team
  • Understand the importance of all types of storytelling including those anchored in traditional media as well as social media, streaming media, and content media and how to strategically use all avenues to reach diverse audiences

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with speech-to-text or related AI technologies.
  • Experience with developer tools, APIs, SDKs, and technical documentation.
  • Previous experience in a startup environment.
