Job Description Summary:

Responsible for supervision, scheduling, and performance reviews of the Telecom and Network Technician’s. Supervisor is responsible for overseeing installation, maintenance and repair of communications equipment within the Medical Center for patient care, voice and data systems. Has considerable latitude in accomplishing assignments which are monitored by the Manager of Telecommunication Services for quality & quantity of tasks completed.

Job Description:

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and oversee the work of the Telecom and Network Technicians.

  • Meet with technicians on a periodic basis to review workflow, elicit input, and provide feedback and guidance. Submit training requirements for self and subordinates by January of each year.

  • Review training requirements throughout the year and revise as necessary. Evaluate technicians per KUMC guidelines and on time.

  • Provide technicians with periodic feedback as to their performance. Establish standard timelines or guidelines for completion of typical work order task (i.e. add analog lines, set and jack).

  • Assign work to the technicians. Ensure technicians report to job site on time. Routine work orders completed within time specified by the equipment planning technician (usually 7-10 working days from receipt of original request).

  • Establish and maintain an inventory control system until automated system is in place.

  • Submits necessary purchasing requests to ensure all materials necessary for installation and repair work are on hand in time to meet due dates of orders.

  • Do periodic site surveys when required to ensure all electrical and floor/building terminals requirements are in place prior to required work order due date.

  • Install, repairs, maintains, and services internal communications equipment devices and related items.

  • Work is reviewed based on productivity and quality consistent with the industry standards and the supervisor’s instruction.

  • Professional conduct should be maintained at all times.

  • Establish priorities of service calls based on critical need of service. Assign service calls to appropriate technician based on experience and training.

  • Assure all service calls before 12 noon are resolved on the same day. Service calls received after 12 noon must be resolved by 12 noon of the following day. All tickets received from the help desk must have the status updated in Service Center in a timely fashion.

  • Perform project management task on large and complex projects. This task should include feasibility, planning and implementation. Identify timelines, identify, and assign tasks, follow up to ensure technicians or vendors are on schedule and meet project deadlines. Execution of projects may be after-hours.

  • Interpret and apply technical and maintenance manuals on new and existing equipment for installation and repair.

  • Recommend policy and procedure updates to meet service level objectives.

  • Assure all test equipment is in operational order and arrange for repair or ordering of test equipment as required.

  • Assure technicians are trained in the use, operation, and care of test equipment.

Work Environment

  • Projects include after-hours coordination; participates in 24x7 problem response.

  • This position requires incumbent to be able to move equipment weighing up to 100 lbs. a distance of up to 50 feet, with or without accommodation.

Required Qualifications

Education: High school diploma/GED

Work Experience:

  • 3 years experience installing and servicing data, voice and/or video networks (TDM, VoIP, fiber, etc.)

  • Two years supervisory experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience:

  • 5 years experience with analog digital voice and data equipment installation, diagnosis, repair, and modification.

  • 3 - 5 years supervisory experience overseeing a staff of installation and repair technicians. Campus environment preferred.

Skills:

  • Detailed oriented individual.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work well under stress, within defined timelines.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
