CMC Markets are hiring! We are currently recruiting for a Legal Counsel to join our APAC Legal team on a permanent basis based in our Barangaroo office . Please note this role is only open to Sydney based candidates with full working rights (Citizen/Permanent Resident).

Role

The purpose of the role is to consistently deliver high quality legal services to the CFD and Stockbroking business of CMC Markets in Australia and the APAC region. This role will be mainly litigation and disputes focused, with exposure to general corporate/commercial in-house matters.

Please note that we operate onsite working and would require you to come into our Barangaroo office 5 days per week.

Key responsibilities

  • Report to, assist and maintain a close working relationship with Senior Legal Counsel APAC and the APAC Legal Team in order to support the wider APAC Senior Management team to deliver the objectives of the region.
  • Assist Senior Legal Counsel with managing all aspects of major litigation that CMC Markets is involved in, including obtaining instructions from stakeholders within the business, reviewing court documents and correspondence, gathering evidence and assisting with managing external legal supplier budgets and expenses.
  • Flexibility to work on a broader range of commercial matters involving other parts of CMC Markets’ APAC business e.g.
  • Reviewing marketing material, commercial contracts;
  • Working on remediation and regulatory issues with Compliance Team;
  • Working with internal Disputes Team to advise on or respond to customer complaints or matters in AFCA;
  • Assisting the business on its debt collection matters;  
  • Assisting with the management and review of CMC Markets’ legal disclosure documents, terms and client application forms for both the CFD and stockbroking businesses in Australia and the APAC region including PDSs, FSGs and Stockbroking terms and conditions.
  • Establish effective working relationships with members of the business and external legal providers.
  • Proactively identify and raise potential matters that can impact CMC Markets’ interests.
  • Provide legal input as required into APAC policies and procedures from time to time.
  • Liaise with the APAC Legal Team and globally, where relevant, to ensure that knowledge and relevant information is shared.
  • Deliver training when required to CMC Markets’ colleagues on legal issues.

Key Skills And Experience:

Essential:

  • Practising solicitor (3 to 4 years’ post qualification experience).
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to communicate complex legal issues in plain English verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation, critical thinking, analytical and negotiation skills.
  • Self-driver with willingness to learn and tackle new challenges.
  • Collaborative team player who can work independently, and consult more senior lawyers in team and escalate matters when required.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage workflow expectations in line with business requirements.
  • Willingness to be involved in a variety of matters and work in a fast-paced environment.

Desirable:

  • 3-4 years commercial litigation experience from national or top-tier law firm.
  • General corporate and commercial law experience preferred but not essential.
  • Experience in the financial services industry preferred but not essential. 
  • CFD and/or stockbroking product knowledge preferred but not required.
