Job Title: Senior Associate Engineer

Salary: £38,800 to £46,000

Location: Shrewsbury, Shropshire

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Applications Engineer within the Caterpillar Defense powertrain engineering team. The team is based in Shrewsbury and is responsible for the configuration, design and development of engines, transmissions and powerpacks for both wheeled and tracked military vehicles. The products used in these application’s range from commercially based Caterpillar inline 6 engines (C7.1 to C18) through to Caterpillar Shrewsbury Ltd.’s in house CV8/CV12 engines and X300 cross-drive transmission. This specific role will be focused on the needs of inline 6 customers as they seek support to specify, integrate and sign off their respective installations.

Additional Info

  • Hybrid work pattern – office 3 days per week, travel exception apply.

  • Travel requirements may be up to 15% and can be international.

What You Will Do

  • Collaborate with customers and leadership to scope and execute projects that meet the needs of the business.

  • Keep up to date on new technologies and drive continuous improvement to established techniques.

  • Propose the best integration solutions to customers to ensure Caterpillar is selected as primary engine supplier to meet the customers project goals for quality, time and cost.

  • Deliver timely, high-quality test or simulation data and analysis for customer applications, impacting products/processes and providing clear recommendations to stakeholders.

  • Approve mechanical and electrical design for customer machines for production, by judging approval risk and balancing high installation standards with customers experience and machine requirements.

What You Have – Level Working knowledge

Technical Excellence:

  • Educated to degree level in mechanical, electronic, electrical or control systems engineering; however, consideration will be given to other qualifications or significant job-related experience in lieu of this.

  • Capable of reviewing customer requirements and providing feedback to all necessary stakeholders on compliance.

  • Capable of understanding and supplying complex data to support the needs of customers (3D models, engine application guides and engine performance data etc.)

Customer Focus

  • Knowledge of the values and practices that align customer needs and satisfaction as primary considerations in all business decisions and ability to leverage that information in creating customized customer solutions.

  • Experience working with OEM customers in the off-highway machine, automative or defense sectors, with knowledge of their integration requirements. 

Relationship Management

  • Knowledge of relationship management techniques; ability to establish and maintain healthy working relationships with clients, vendors, and peers.

  • Experience working at customer sites performing mechanical or electrical testing.

  • Able to leverage existing relationships with customers to drive solutions.

Process Management

  • Knowledge of business process improvement tools and techniques; ability to understand, monitor, update, control, or enhance existing business or work processes.

  • Actively collecting and developing detailed mechanical and electrical customer requirements. 

Accuracy and Attention to Detail

  • Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.  

Problem Solving:

  • Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.  

Effective Communications

  • Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.

  • Makes oral presentations and writes reports needed for own work.
