Northrop Grumman’s Defense Systems sector is need of an Engineer Manufacturing Level 2 or 3 to support the Propulsion Systems & Controls (PS&C) operating unit. This role would require the candidate to support the PS&C business on-site from the Elkton, MD facility. The position can be filled at a level 2 or level 3 engineering position.  The level to be hired will depend on education, experience, and demonstrated skills.

Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Elkton, Maryland is located on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. The Engineer Manufacturing is tasked with developing manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for various assemblies, equipment installations, processing, machining, and welding activities. This role involves designing the sequence of operations and defining procedures for the fabrication of tools and equipment, as well as other functions that influence product performance. The engineer adapts machine, or equipment designs to align with factory and production conditions. Additionally, they may integrate inspection and testing requirements into the production plan. The engineer evaluates the performance of machinery, equipment, and tools to confirm their efficiency, and addresses any issues or deficiencies to maintain product quality. They also provide engineering guidance on design concepts and specification requirements to optimize the use of equipment and manufacturing techniques. Furthermore, the engineer ensures that all processes and procedures comply with relevant regulations.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage various welding projects, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards while coordinating with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives.

  • Conduct thorough analyses of engineering designs to identify specific welding requirements, ensuring that all aspects of the design are compatible with the intended welding processes and materials.

  • Supervise and mentor a skilled team of welders, providing guidance on best practices, safety protocols, and technical skills to enhance overall team performance and productivity.

  • Evaluate and refine welding procedures, processes, and associated documentation to ensure compliance with industry standards and to facilitate continuous improvement in welding operations.

  • Oversee the qualification of welding procedures, developing new protocols that support both manufacturing and welding teams in achieving optimal results and maintaining high-quality standards.

  • Possess substantial experience in various engineering disciplines, including but not limited to welding engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and materials science, contributing to a well-rounded understanding of engineering principles.

  • Maintain a foundational understanding of welding and joining techniques, enabling effective troubleshooting of welding processes and ensuring that products meet stringent technical specifications.

  • Demonstrate a solid grasp of professional engineering concepts and practices, evidenced by hands-on experience in researching, designing, testing, analyzing, and validating mechanical engineering solutions.

  • Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of welding and joining processes utilized in manufacturing, along with strategies for optimizing these processes to enhance efficiency and quality.

  • Showcase strong written communication skills, facilitating clear and effective documentation of welding processes, procedures, and technical reports, while also possessing expertise in advanced welding methods such as laser and electron beam welding.

This requisition may be filled at a higher grade based on qualifications listed below.

Basic Qualifications Engineer Manufacturing - Level 2:

  • This position emphasizes skills and experience. Will consider the following: a high school diploma or GED accompanied by at least 6 years of relevant experience, a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a minimum of 2 years of related experience, or a Master’s Degree with no required years of related experience.

  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance

Basic Qualifications Principal Engineer Manufacturing - Level 3:

  • This position emphasizes skills and experience. Will consider the following: a high school diploma or GED accompanied by at least 9 years of relevant experience, a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a minimum of 5 years of related experience, a Master’s Degree with 3 years of related experience, or 1 year with a PhD

  • Must be a US citizen and able to obtain a DoD Secret security clearance

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Secret DoD clearance

  • Experience with Continuous Improvement/Lean/5-S Methodologies

Salary Range: $77,600.00 - $116,400.00Salary Range 2: $95,800.00 - $143,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
