Product Owner

The Company

CRB Cunninghams is the UK's leading provider of cashless catering, identity management, online payments, and nutritional analysis solutions, supporting more than 3,300 schools and colleges nationwide.

With nearly 60 years of heritage, we employ over 100 dedicated professionals, including a national field service team delivering fast, expert support wherever it is needed. We operate from offices in Headley (Birmingham) and Loanhead (Edinburgh).

In recent years, CRB Cunninghams has experienced strong growth, driven by innovation, customer intimacy, operational excellence, and a clear, meaningful vision.

Our purpose is simple and powerful:
When children eat well and enjoy lunchtimes, they are happier, healthier, and achieve more.

Our strategy is to help schools deliver fully cashless dining experiences that enable anonymous free-school-meal access, streamline operations, and accelerate the provision of nutritious meals.

The Role

The Product Owner will help lead an early-stage product opportunity, working at the intersection of customer insight, commercial opportunity, and delivery reality to find product-market fit and build out a new product area that solves meaningful customer problems and creates lasting value for the business.

This role is ideal for someone with strong product instincts who enjoys discovery as much as delivery, is comfortable working through uncertainty, and can balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution.

The opportunity sits primarily within the operational and kitchen management space — an area of growing strategic importance to the business and one where meaningful product gaps remain.

AI fluency is expected as part of modern product practice. You should be comfortable using AI tools to improve the speed and quality of your own work, and thoughtful about where AI-enabled experiences or automation could create meaningful value for customers and the business.

Key Responsibilities

Opportunity Discovery & Validation

  • Lead discovery on a new product opportunity, identifying meaningful customer problems and unmet needs.

  • Work directly with customers, users, and stakeholders to test assumptions and validate where to focus.

  • Define the problem space, target users, value proposition, and success criteria for the product.

Product Strategy & Prioritisation

  • Shape the product direction, roadmap, and prioritised backlog around the earliest valuable use case.

  • Turn broad opportunities into clear outcomes, hypotheses, and testable increments.

  • Make thoughtful trade-offs on scope, sequencing, and pace.

Product Delivery & Execution

  • Partner closely with design and engineering to move from concept to launch.

  • Lead day-to-day product decisions through delivery, including backlog refinement and scope trade-offs.

Customer Value & Adoption

  • Define and track early signals of customer value, adoption, and traction.

  • Act as the internal product lead for the opportunity, creating clarity and momentum across the business.

Key Skills & Experience

  • Experience in a Product Owner, Product Manager, or similar role, ideally in software, SaaS, or digital products.

  • Strong curiosity and product instinct.

  • Comfortable working through ambiguity and turning it into clear next steps.

  • Confident conducting customer discovery and turning insight into product decisions.

  • Able to define priorities, make trade-offs, and focus on the smallest valuable thing worth building first.

  • Evidence of ownership, initiative, and follow-through.

  • Strong collaborator and communicator across design, engineering, commercial, and operational teams.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience launching a new digital product or leading a major product expansion from an early stage.

  • Experience in B2B, EdTech, payments, or operational workflow products.

  • Familiarity with environments involving multiple user types, operational complexity, or regulated processes.

  • Experience working on products used by schools, caterers, or public sector organisations.

  • Working knowledge of or professional exposure to catering operations, kitchen management, or food service workflows.

What Success Looks Like

  • A clearly defined and validated product opportunity with strong evidence of customer need and a compelling first use case.

  • A focused first product direction that balances speed, learning, and long-term potential.

  • Early launches that deliver real learning, clear traction signals, and a strong foundation for scaling.

Why Join CRB Cunninghams?

  • Help build out a new product area in a market-leading EdTech business, with real scope to shape what gets built and how.

  • Join a collaborative team with strong domain knowledge, a clear mission, and real appetite to innovate.

  • Play a high-impact role with genuine scope to influence what gets built next.
