Job Summary:
The Associate, Global Corporate & Investment Banking (GCIB) role supports the Senior Relationship Managers (RMs) in building and strengthening key client relationships and maximizing profit from the exiting portfolio. The Associate is principally responsible for managing various internal processes relate to deal approval, executions, and ongoing support of client relationships. This position will primarily support the coverage of Canadian financial sponsors as part of the global RM team, with additional coverage responsibilities for a diversified set of clients in technology, media, and telecom sector.
Key Accountabilities:
Business Origination:
- Support Senior Relationship Managers (RMs) in maximizing profit from the existing portfolio by identifying new business opportunities, as well as pursuing new clients.
- Collaborate with and support Senior RMs in undertaking strategic client discussions and in the preparation of pitch books.
- Attend client meetings, both in-person and virtually, to discuss various topics including market updates, product pitches, and opportunity discussions; record meeting notes for timely circulation within relevant teams (both locally and internationally).
- Prepare Business Screening Memos, Deal Screening Committee Memos, and other reports necessary for the recommendation of new transactions.
- Monitoricorporate news, and industry trends for sectors covered; participate in quarterly earning calls.
- Assist the Portfolio Management (PM) team for the preparation of credit applications for new and existing clients/facilities, as required.
- Review credit documentation, term sheets, and monitor financial reporting.
- Coordinate with the appropriate internal product and operational teams to ensure new transactions are properly executed following established procedures and protocols.
- Collaborate with global FIG & Sponsor coverage colleagues and product teams, to track and providing support for global sponsor-backed financing activities.
Portfolio Maintenance
- Maintain Know Your Client (KYC) compliance for new and existing clients.
- Work with Senior RMs to prepare periodic deal pipeline reports for Canada Branch for ongoing and closed opportunities; maintain a global sponsor coverage-focused deal pipeline for weekly meetings.
- Ensure global sponsor related revenues are tracked appropriately.
- Troubleshoot operational issues brought to the attention of Senior RMs.
- Perform ad hoc branch-related maintenance tasks; coordinate inter-Americas and Head Office reporting requirements and systems updates.
Collaboration across teams
- Coordinate with the product partners of MUFG to cross-sell the breadth of the bank's products.
- Coordinate with the PM team and Credit team with respect to due diligence questions pertaining to credit renewals and new transactions.
- Coordinate internal reporting requirements for client base.
- Coordinate with global sponsor coverage partners to maintain an active database of Canadian sponsor deal activity and discussions
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
- Proficiency in external research platforms (Bloomberg, FactSet, etc.)
- Proficiency in assessing credit agreements and other forms of legal documentation
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and relationship management skills
Experience & Abilities:
The ideal candidate for the Associate position on the GCIB Canada team is an individual with strong interpersonal and credit skills. The role is ideally suited for ambitious, enthusiastic finance professionals with 4-5 years of corporate banking (or similar) experience, who have a global perspective and desire to work for a global banking organization with growing, entrepreneurial Canadian operations.
The incumbent should:
- Have a solid understanding of financial statements, bank/capital markets products, and credit documentation.
- Be able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines accordingly.
- Have strong organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity.
Education & Training:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or related discipline
Working Conditions:
- 4 days in-office
- Occasional travel required
