The Position:
GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION: The Ivy Tech Indianapolis – Lawrence Library is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, service-oriented library assistant to provide support for all library patrons at the Fairbanks Center for Health Professions. This individual will be responsible for leading and facilitating support for our students’ technology needs, as well as standard circulation and interlibrary loan tasks, library usage tracking, and other clerical needs for the Lawrence Library. A strong candidate for this position will be committed to fostering student success, will take initiative to provide a variety of professional library services face-to-face and virtually, and will be an active participant on the library team.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Technology Assistance

  • Proactively assist all students and faculty with available technology resources in the library, including computers and computer applications, audio/visual equipment, the Anatomage table, the print management system, and the scanning/fax station
  • Proactively assist all students with technology needs, including computer and internet literacy basics, and troubleshooting questions related to students’ learning management system, joining Zoom sessions, using Microsoft or Google applications, etc.
  • Stay aware of, install, and learn regular updates to the Anatomage table, and coach students and faculty how to utilize this technology for their courses
  • Monitor, submit, and follow-up on IT and facility issues
  • Stay current on information technology trends and best practices

Student-Centered Service

  • Greet every student or patron in a warm, welcoming manner
  • Assist students with study room check-in, library policies and procedures, directional questions about campus facilities, scheduling tutoring appointments, and connecting them with other campus resources
  • Answer the phone promptly and in a friendly manner, providing exemplary customer service for library & tutoring services
  • Monitor online chat service in alignment with library protocols and communicate with students via email and phone as needed
  • Demonstrate a strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving and desire to identify and support student success
  • Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued and supported
  • Go beyond the easiest or surface answer for a student, or an internal or external customer, and get to the root cause of the problem, question or issue to solve it as quickly and professionally as possible

Professional Library Services

  • Utilize the ILS system to perform circulation tasks including (but not limited to) checking materials in and out, retrieving and re-shelving items using Library of Congress classifications, and preparing and processing holds and inter-library loan requests
  • Assist students with locating and navigating print and digital library resources, including books, textbook reserves, and the library’s website
  • Maintain the organization of library materials and spaces, including proper and timely reshelving and shelf reading, and periodic cleaning of study spaces, reservable study rooms, and the library classroom
  • Process and catalogue print periodicals and maintain textbook reserve collection
  • Create community patron accounts and library cards as needed

General

  • Collect and maintain library usage data and assist with running reports as requested
  • Work with library team and Director to purchase resources, materials, and supplies for the Lawrence Library
  • Assist librarians with developing and executing in-library displays
  • Assist librarians with developing and maintaining Library Guides
  • Assist team with developing and planning relevant programming and marketing materials
  • Monitor the information desk to maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for staff and patrons

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associates degree in a related field
  • Customer service experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse audiences. Ability to maintain tactful, pleasant, and non-judgmental interactions with patrons.
  • Proficiency with computer and web applications on various devices, including Windows PCs, MacBooks, and Google Chromebooks. Working knowledge of course management systems (e.g. Canvas or Blackboard), Microsoft and Google Suites, email and chat applications, and Zoom

Work Environment

  • While performing duties for this job, the staff member will frequently operate a computer, speak, listen, and move about the library to assist students at various workstations.
  • A strong candidate for this position will be able to take initiative for independent tasks and work collaboratively with colleagues. This position requires flexibility and problem solving.

Starting Salary Range: $16.20
