Product Development Engineer

Job Description:

Technology is at the heart of Disney’s past, present, and future. Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product & Technology is a global organization of engineers, product developers, designers, technologists, data scientists, and more – all working to build and advance the technological backbone for Disney’s media business globally.

The team marries technology with creativity to build world-class products, enhance storytelling, and drive velocity, innovation, and scalability for our businesses. We are Storytellers and Innovators. Creators and Builders. Entertainers and Engineers. We work with every part of The Walt Disney Company’s media portfolio to advance the technological foundation and consumer media touch points serving millions of people around the world.

Here are a few reasons why we think you’d love working here:

  • Building the future of Disney’s media: Our Technologists are designing and building the products and platforms that will power our media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.
  • Reach, Scale & Impact: More than ever, Disney’s technology and products serve as a signature doorway for fans' connections with the company’s brands and stories. Disney+. Hulu. ESPN. ABC. ABC News…and many more. These products and brands – and the unmatched stories, storytellers, and events they carry – matter to millions of people globally.
  • Innovation: We develop and implement groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms, and solve complex and distinctive technical problems.

Role Overview

We’re hiring Product Development Engineers across all experience levels—including individual contributors and technical leaders—who are passionate about building new products, pioneering breakthrough technologies, and shaping the future of Disney’s media platforms. In this role, you’ll architect, prototype, and deliver novel software solutions that push the boundaries of what’s possible in streaming, advertising, personalization, and large‑scale distributed systems.

Rather than maintaining legacy systems, you’ll focus on greenfield development, innovation‑driven problem solving, and designing for the future—creating foundational capabilities that enable entirely new consumer and business experiences. Depending on level, you may define technical direction for complex initiatives, drive end‑to‑end product development, or contribute to mission‑critical components that power products used by millions.

*Throughout the recruitment process we will evaluate your skills and experience to determine level placement

Responsibilities

  • Design and build new product capabilities from concept to production, including prototyping, architecture, implementation, and iterative refinement.
  • Develop systems and features that don’t exist yet—solving ambiguous, complex, and novel engineering challenges at scale.
  • Partner with product managers, designers, researchers, and cross‑functional stakeholders to explore opportunities, validate ideas, and bring forward‑thinking product visions to life.
  • Create resilient, high‑performance systems optimized for scalability, innovation velocity, and long‑term extensibility.
  • Drive technical discovery and experimentation, evaluating emerging technologies and proposing new approaches to improve product experiences and system capabilities.
  • Lead or contribute to design reviews, architectural discussions, and technical direction for new product initiatives (responsibility level depends on experience).
  • Ensure engineering excellence through thoughtful documentation, rigorous testing strategies, and commitment to maintainability as products evolve.
  • Troubleshoot complex issues in new systems, identifying root causes and implementing sustainable, future‑proof solutions.
  • Work within an Agile/iterative development model, helping the team quickly test, learn, and adapt throughout the product development lifecycle.

Basic Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Java, C#, Go, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar).
  • Experience building backend, frontend, mobile, or full‑stack applications and integrating with APIs (e.g., REST/gRPC/GraphQL).
  • Familiarity with data persistence (relational and/or NoSQL), caching concepts, and schema/design fundamentals.
  • Comfort with Git‑based workflows and CI/CD practices; commitment to testing, code reviews, and documentation.
  • Strong communication skills, collaborative mindset, and attention to detail.
