Manager, Regulatory

We are seeking a Manager, Regulatory to join MEG Energy and lead our team of regulatory and land professionals providing expertise for our SAGD operations. In this role, you are responsible for providing regulatory and project management support to multiple clients within the organization to ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, and local regulations as they pertain to our operations. In addition, you are responsible for leading regulatory activities related to our surface and mineral land portfolio.  Reporting to Sr Vice President Legal & Corporate Development, this role manages multiple competing priorities in a dynamic collaborative work environment while ensuring effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The role is critical to guiding and ensuring regulatory compliance with our oil sands, pipeline and power assets as well as managing the acquisition, sustainment, and disposition of mineral and surface rights. This role guides the organization as industry regulations evolve and provides recommendations to senior leadership to maximize the effectiveness of our regulatory activities and maintain compliance.

Your Day to Day will include:

  • Lead a team of regulatory, surface and mineral specialists to prepare and negotiate contracts to secure optimal commercial outcomes for the organization.
  • Motivate, guide and coach team members to achieve organizational goals in an inspiring team environment though building high performance capabilities and development opportunities for team members.
  • Collaborate with a wide cross section of internal groups to guide the preparation of regulatory applications for a variety of development and operational activities.
  • Steer our initiatives through regulatory processes ensuring compliance with applications and filings under the AER, AEP, AESO and associated regulatory bodies. 
  • Interface with internal and external stakeholders to support our business strategy.  
  • Work closely with MEG’s Indigenous Relations team to coordinate efforts on necessary project approvals.
  • Accountable for leading required regulatory filing and hearing processes and maintaining relationships with regulatory authorities in anticipation of such work.
  • Manage existing contracts and ensure proper interpretation of land agreements and as related to changing regulatory requirements.
  • Work with regulators and industry groups to represent MEG Energy to anticipate, understand, and analyze proposed regulatory changes that may impact MEG.
  • Ensure MEG pro-actively responds to requests from regulators and stakeholders.
  • Lead efforts to build mutually beneficial relationships with senior regulatory personnel.
  • Advance a framework to manage regulatory requirement tracking and assurances to ensure timely execution.

What you will bring to MEG:

  • 15+ years’ experience in the energy industry with progressively senior roles responsible for managing regulatory affairs
  • University Degree (business, engineering, or science) is required; additional Regulatory or Land professional certifications would be an asset.
  • Excellent understanding of the In Situ and Oil Sands business in Alberta is required.
  • Expertise in Alberta Regulations for Oil Sands operations including extensive background with AER acts and directives required; experience managing pipeline and power regulatory requirements an asset.
  • Superior interpersonal and leadership skills to foster a positive team environment.
  • Ability to easily relate technical requirements and act as a liaison to stakeholders to ensure understanding of regulatory deliverables and requirements.
  • Proven track record in leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Possesses essential project management skills used for planning, scheduling, costs, identifying risks and reporting performance.
  • Proven track record of successful value-added negotiations with a solid knowledge of legal, economic, regulatory and operational issues.
  • Behaviors that exemplify a high level of personal integrity, self-motivation, and leadership in line with MEG’s Core Values.
  • Superior analytical, interpretive, organizational and presentation skills.
  • Excellent internal and external networking skills including ability to develop and maintain relationships supported by superior written and verbal communication skills.
