Histology Technician

Histology Technicians perform staining, tissue sectioning, fixation and embedding techniques. This work is often done while a surgical team awaits a pathologist’s diagnosis. Therefore, the work must be done extremely quickly and accurately. This team is excited about a new, innovative lab coming to Cleveland Clinic in 2025.  

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 8:00am – 4:30pm.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Transport prepared tissue specimens to the Histology Laboratory and place on the automatic tissue processor. 

  • Process specimens and embed and section embedded specimens using a microtome. 

  • Perform routine stains, special stains procedures and enzymehistochemistry stains. 

  • Mount, label and distribute prepared microscope slides to pathologists or to appropriate areas for interpretation. 

  • Prepare reagents buffers, solutions and stains. 

  • Replace reagents and perform daily maintenance on processors. 

  • Perform tests, data entry of patient and specimen information and collect statistics or review patient information through computer programs. 

  • Maintain cleanliness and quality of assigned instrumentation and equipment. 

  • Complete and maintain preventative maintenance and troubleshooting records. 

  • Repair instruments/equipment or initiate requests for instrument/equipment repair or service through vendors or Clinical Engineering. 

  • Section frozen tissue specimens using the cryostat. 

  • File surgical and autopsy blocks as required. 

  • Serve as a resource for students, trainees and residents.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification eligible in the field of histology.  

  • Ability to work in stressful, time critical situations during frozen section procedures.  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • One year of experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires manual dexterity and visual acuity when handling specimens, slides and utilizing instrumentation.
  • Ability to safely handle potentially infectious patient specimens, carcinogenic substances, odorous and other hazardous materials to which they may be exposed.
  • Typical physical demands include ability to sit, stand or walk extensively.
