Histology Technician

Histology Technicians perform staining, tissue sectioning, fixation and embedding techniques. This work is often done while a surgical team awaits a pathologist’s diagnosis. Therefore, the work must be done extremely quickly and accurately. This team is excited about a new, innovative lab coming to Cleveland Clinic in 2025.
A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 8:00am – 4:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Transport prepared tissue specimens to the Histology Laboratory and place on the automatic tissue processor.
Process specimens and embed and section embedded specimens using a microtome.
Perform routine stains, special stains procedures and enzymehistochemistry stains.
Mount, label and distribute prepared microscope slides to pathologists or to appropriate areas for interpretation.
Prepare reagents buffers, solutions and stains.
Replace reagents and perform daily maintenance on processors.
Perform tests, data entry of patient and specimen information and collect statistics or review patient information through computer programs.
Maintain cleanliness and quality of assigned instrumentation and equipment.
Complete and maintain preventative maintenance and troubleshooting records.
Repair instruments/equipment or initiate requests for instrument/equipment repair or service through vendors or Clinical Engineering.
Section frozen tissue specimens using the cryostat.
File surgical and autopsy blocks as required.
Serve as a resource for students, trainees and residents.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification eligible in the field of histology.
Ability to work in stressful, time critical situations during frozen section procedures.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One year of experience.
