As part of a small team you will develop protective packaging and handling requirements for protective packaging for aerospace parts and assemblies that will be shipped from the manufacturing site to suppliers for outside manufacturing processing and eventually on to the launch site.  Includes development of shipping requirements for raw materials.  This position will support all Transportation and Logistics functions to ensure on-time delivery of products.

Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee and manage packaging development process, including the creation of packaging standards, designs, prototype development, and performance testing, if needed.
  • Interpret military and commercial standards and be capable of applying them to packaging designs.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging. Ensure packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability..
  • Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Interaction with both internal and external customers to meet demands to support Blue Origin production requirements.
  • Work closely with suppliers, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Supplier Management.
  • Observe and offer opportunities for improvements in corporate process.
  • Support extensive travel throughout the US as required.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is required. Must have 2+ years of experience in a Packaging Engineer function
  • Years of work experience can be substituted for degree
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards
  • Experience in 3D CAD software.
  • Experience in Logistics, Transportation, and Shipping aerospace hardware (minimum 2 years)
  • Experience with Shipping Department functions which include material handling, packaging aerospace hardware and hazardous materials, and raw materials including metals (minimum 2 years)
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • Experience in manufacturing, aerospace or military environments.
  • Experience with all modes of transportation.
  • Experience with International Shipments
  • Experience with protective packaging material
  • Dangerous Goods certification for all modes of Transportation or some knowledge of 49 CFR, IATA, or IMDG Code.
  • Experience with interpretation of military packaging standards, specifically MIL-STD-2073-1.
  • Understanding of physics and physical forces on products during transportation
