Position Summary:

Hillenbrand is looking for an Indirect Tax Manager to join our hybrid team in Batesville, IN. The Indirect Tax Manager will assist in managing the day-to-day domestic Indirect State & Local tax operations of Hillenbrand and assisting in the execution of the corporate and tax strategy. 

Work You’ll Do:

  • Indirect Tax Compliance

    • Manage the tax compliance function to ensure timely and accurate preparation and filing of returns (Including property tax returns, sales and use tax returns, Canadian GST/HST/PST returns, business licenses, and fuel tax)

  • Tax Authority Audits and Inquiries

    • Manage the state and local tax authority audit process

    • Develop appropriate technical and fact-based response to audit requests

    • Research technical issues and develop appropriate technical memoranda supporting the company’s position

    • Critically analyze tax authority responses and assessments for technical, factual, and mathematical accuracy

  • Sales Tax Software

    • Familiar with sales tax engines & how they work with ERP systems

    • Assist with implementation of sales tax engines

    • Manage Vertex TDM for sales & use tax compliance

    • Analyze transactional data

  • State Exemption Certificates

    • Develop and maintain process to obtain & manage sales tax exemption certificates

    • Develop process for Operating Companies to follow in issuing customer credit

    • Educate individuals internal and external to the organization on exemption certificate requirements

  • Operations Support

    • Advise business units and other corporate functions on tax matters and policy

    • Assist in developing and implementing operational tax processes and technologies to improve functional efficiencies

    • Review of monthly indirect tax accrual reconciliations and journal entries

    • Provide training and guidance to staff on indirect tax matters

  • Tax Engine Support

    • Assist with tax engine configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting

    • Advise on data mapping and tax code assignments in tax engine systems

    • Manage and execute tax engine upgrades and testing

  • Special Projects

    • Support the Operating Companies with various indirect tax issues

    • Assist in the integration of acquired businesses

    • Participate in analysis around due diligence

    • Evaluate state tax nexus and provide filing recommendations

    • Monitor changes in tax legislation and assess their impact on the business


Team:

The Indirect Tax Manager reports to the Senior Manager of Tax & Compliance and will oversee direct reports.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Finance, Tax, or Accounting and 5+ years of related corporate indirect tax experience, or equivalent combination of education and years of experience with an emphasis in indirect taxation

  • Possess and maintain a working knowledge of advanced state and local indirect tax laws

  • Indirect tax experience, ideally in a multinational manufacturing environment with increasing levels of responsibility in the tax area

  • Experience with Vertex Q and/or Vertex O, Vertex Indirect Tax Return Software, SureTax, or equivalent tax technology, including implementation and integration with ERP systems is preferred

  • Ability to research and document complex tax issues; implement tax savings strategies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CPA, JD, or MST
