🤑 About the Finance Team

The Finance team covers everything and anything money at Whatnot. We are broken down into Strategic Finance, Accounting and Tax. As a founding member of our Tax Team, you will help define the tax function at Whatnot.

💻 Role

We are looking for a Tax Manager to join our growing Finance team. This role will cover our UK and EU markets with a focus on VAT, DST, DAC7 reporting, and customs duties. This role will partner with all aspects of the business to give our UK and EU buyers and sellers a seamless experience when it comes to taxes. A successful candidate will come with an analytical, data-centric mindset to deliver user-sympathetic solutions by utilizing and building tax technology tools. This role will report to the Director of Tax.

You will:

  • Manage the UK and EU indirect tax life-cycle including the collection, reporting, remittance and audit of indirect taxes.
  • Own the surfaces where our EU and UK users interact with indirect taxes, including DAC7 reporting.
  • Build systems and processes to administer Digital Services Taxes.
  • Support the development and deployment of in-house and third-party tax technology solutions to administer VAT and GST and DST collection and remittance in the UK and EU; including tax engine, tax codification, compliance, seller income reporting tools, automation of invoicing and other solutions.
  • Build systems and processes to collect and remit import taxes and duties.
  • Assist with the administration of transfer pricing and filing for corporate income tax returns for our international entities.
  • Partner with customer support and other business teams to provide users with best-in-class information with respect to the collection and reporting of taxes. 
  • Partner with cross-functional groups throughout the company to integrate tax considerations into business initiatives and operations.

Team members in this role are required to be within commuting distance of our London or Dublin hubs.

  • CPA, JD or equivalent certification.
  • 6+ years of tax experience in public accounting and in-house at a tech company (marketplace experience a plus).
  • Experience developing and deploying tax technology solutions in user-facing situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new tax topics and the ability to apply learnings to technology products and companies.
  • Ability to effectively partner with cross-functional teams and outside advisors to build processes and deliver projects.
  • Experience with ERP and tax engines such as Netsuite, Avalara or Foana. Prior exposure to tax technology implementation projects helpful.
  • Data analytics skills, including Excel skills. SQL knowledge is a plus.
  • Sound accounting fundamentals, including ability to analyze data to reconstruct, detect, support or refute a position and ensure that explanation provided reconciles with the underlying data.
  • Proven project management and organizational skills with the experience to prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Thrives in a high paced environment, self-starter with a “roll your sleeves up” attitude.
  • Capability to communicate effectively within a remote-first environment.
