About the role
Part of the Refined Products Trading organization, Global Distillates (GDIST) is responsible for trading, marketing, and optimizing distillates, feedstocks, and related products across global markets.
This is a front-line commercial role responsible for developing and delivering trading strategies across Latin American distillates markets. The successful candidate will join the Americas trading bench based in Chicago and generate value through physical and financial trading, market development, customer and counterparty engagement, portfolio optimization, and end-to-end trade execution.
Key Accountabilities
- Identify, develop, and implement an entrepreneurial trading strategy across LATAM distillates and product markets, generating value through physical and financial trading opportunities, market development, customer engagement, regional trade flows, market volatility, logistical arbitrage, pricing inefficiencies, and physical risk management opportunities
- Support the GDIST LATAM Lead and USGC Waterborne Trader in the execution, optimization, risk management, and commercial development of physical positions across the distillate's portfolio
- Help shape and use bp's market analytics, pricing models, and trading tools by contributing market intelligence, regional expertise, and commercial insights to develop market views, determine fair value, identify trading opportunities, and support portfolio optimization and strategic decision-making.
- Monitor regional and global market fundamentals, including supply-demand balances, refinery operations, logistics constraints, regulatory developments, and pricing structures, and maintain forward curves, regional balances, and market views to support trading activity and business planning.
- Establish and maintain a strong network of third-party relationships and other market participants throughout Latin America.
- Engage with internal partners to ensure effective end-to-end trade execution, governance, and risk management.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant deal capture, documentation, position management, and risk reporting in accordance with bp policies, controls, and regulatory requirements.
- Support daily exposure management, P&L attribution, portfolio optimization, and performance analysis in line with approved risk limits and trading mandates.
- Participate actively in GDIST strategic discussions, contributing market insights, commercial recommendations, portfolio strategy perspectives and the development of our LATAM regional office capability.
Essential Education, experience and requirements
- Bachelor´s Degree
- Proven track record of trading physical oil products, refined products, or related commodities, with experience in Latin American markets
- Ability to operate effectively across different cultures, regulatory frameworks, and business environments throughout LATAM, with proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese
- Strong understanding of LATAM distillates markets, including diesel, jet fuel, feedstocks, marine fuels, regional trade flows, logistics, pricing mechanisms, and key market participants.
- Demonstrated understanding of commodity trading principles, risk management, market structure, and the commercial drivers of physical and derivative markets.
- Experience identifying, developing, and implementing commercial and trading opportunities across physical and financial instruments.
- Strong analytical and quantitative capabilities, including interpreting market data, assess market fundamentals, build commercial insights, and support trading decisions through analytics and pricing models.
- Experience managing physical positions, trading exposures, and associated risks across the trade lifecycle, including exposure reconciliation, position reporting, P&L attribution, and resolution of operational and system discrepancies
- Proven track record to build and manage commercial relationships and negotiate effectively with counterparties, customers, suppliers, brokers, and internal interested parties.
- Self-motivated, highly driven, and adaptable, able to work independently, handle multiple priorities, and maintain strong commercial judgment in a fast-paced and volatile trading environment.
- Inquisitive and intellectually curious, with a passion for understanding market fundamentals, commercial drivers, and emerging opportunities.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate across commercial, risk, operations, supply, and support functions.
How much do we pay (Base)? 95,000-176,000 USD Annually
- Note that the pay range listed for this position is a genuinely expected and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.
This position is eligible for US Benefits – Core. This position offers paid vacation depending on your years of relevant industry experience and will range from 120 – 240 hours of vacation per year for full time employees. You will also be eligible for 9 paid holidays per year and 2 personal choice holidays.
