We’re looking for a problem solver and collaborative legal counsel who values inclusivity and wants to join an amazing team of dedicated professionals on eBay’s Privacy, AI, and Data Responsibility team.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Global Privacy Counsel - Advertising and Marketing will be the primary privacy advisor on all global advertising, marketing, product, and Growth-related initiatives. The role will directly interface with legal, business, product, and other stakeholders responsible for advertising and marketing operations at eBay and on exciting and evolving topics involving personal information in these areas.

Specific duties will include:

  • Providing timely and pragmatic legal advice to business leaders, including proactively identifying issues and developing recommendations pertaining to adtech and martech, use of cookies and tracking technologies, compliance with marketing-related regulations, and working with product teams to ensure privacy compliance within customer-facing designs and flows;
  • Building strong cross-functional relationships that support and enable marketing and advertising initiatives, as well as product privacy support, to achieve successful business outcomes while mitigating and managing risk;
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate templates and guidelines for emails (marketing and transactional) and guidelines for outreach by marketing and operations teams;
  • Assisting and enhancing eBay’s Global Privacy program by ensuring that marketing opt-outs and contact preferences, data subject access requests pertaining to data held by marketing teams, and do-not-sell requests under the CCPA are operationalized, applied, and respected;
  • Staying informed as eBay’s subject matter expert on applicable laws, regulations, industry guidance, and industry trends that may impact marketing and advertising initiatives involving personal information, including potential or likely changes to data privacy laws or relevant adtech or martech ecosystems; and
  • Performing other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of direct experience in legal practice focused on data privacy
  • Experience in giving global privacy advice and practical application of advised approaches
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key marketing concepts and technologies, as well as compliance obligations for European and Americas regulations and laws pertaining to the use of personal data for marketing purposes, including but not limited to, the ePrivacy Regulation, UK PECR, CAN-SPAM Act, and email marketing laws worldwide
  • Understanding of core principles under the GDPR and CCPA, online privacy laws, and best practices for data enrichment
  • Strong relationship-building, problem-solving, and collaboration skills, and the ability to effectively influence stakeholders by communicating privacy-related concepts and practical impact
  • Proven ability to successfully multi-task, remain responsive and agile to changes in business priorities, and deliver pragmatic, risk-based recommendations to the business
  • Demonstrated ability to own one’s work and manage time spent on projects independently with minimized supervision while performing duties
  • Qualified lawyer in the U.S., Canada, or U.K.

Valued Skills:

  • In-house experience preferred
  • Experience implementing and maintaining an opt-in/opt-out program and negotiating partnership and data-sharing agreements
  • Experience navigating recent proposed changes to the adtech landscape
  • Experience guiding teams in implementing pixels and other tracking technologies
  • Experience working with product teams toward privacy by design and default
  • IAPP Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) or a similar certification or a willingness to complete such certification within a reasonable time following hire

Location:

  • Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S., San Jose, California, U.S., or Toronto, Canada preferred; London, U.K. potentially depending on skillset and experience
