Job Summary and Description:

The Facilities Mechanical Engineering Manager at Micron is responsible for managing a team of engineers that are the subject matter experts for the HVAC, cooling water and mechanical systems across the entire Boise campus including the ID1 high volume manufacturing fab. The engineering team works closely with the Operations team to ensure the systems are operating as designed and within specification limits, assists in trouble shooting, drives reliability and efficiency improvements and monitors system parameters. Provides design engineering support for base build projects, system expansion, modifications, and new equipment installations by developing the statement of work, sequence of operations and basis of design. This includes providing design review input and submittal review. Responsible for driving global alignment, reliability and efficiency improvements, cost reductions, capacity planning, improved automation and monitoring, regulatory compliance, cost reductions and alignment to sustainability goals.

 Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Safety & Quality:

  • Completes all required safety training and conducts all work in accordance with Micron safety policies
  • Stops work for safety if unsafe conditions and/or behaviors are identified
  • Utilizes and reviews job hazard analysis (JHA/JSA) for work being performed
  • Follows all safety and environmental procedures to ensure compliance with applicable regulations including PPE, CoHE (lockout /tagout) and chemical safety
  • Follows-up on safety and quality related issues immediately and works towards resolution with stakeholders
  • Actively participates in the EHS program by reporting all EHS-related concerns or problems immediately (maximum 24 hours)
  • Performs and facilitates audits and submits good catches
  • Always wears appropriate PPE, per JHA, Supervisor, EHS professionals, and/or job designation
  • Proactively identifies opportunities to reduce potential hazards which may impact personnel health and/or the environment
  • Follows proper change management practices to ensure safety and quality expectations are met
  • Drives quality improvement initiatives in their area to reduce Fab impacts, improve efficiency and identify cost savings
  • Ensures area-specific procedures and documents exist and submits updates to content when needed

 Compliance:

  • Ensures mechanical systems are compliant with applicable local and federal regulatory agencies including Micron’s air discharge permits
  • Ensures team is compliant with Micron policies and external quality and EHS certification standards
  • Works with EHS to oversee air quality permitting and maintenance are compliant and in accordance with regulatory agencies
  • Coordinates with internal environmental groups and legal to ensure correct policy interpretation
  • Maintains company policy and ensures team stays current on policy changes

 Area Performance:

  • Ensures the reliability of all site mechanical operating systems
  • Works closely with customers to ensure daily operations, maintenance and foreseeable equipment failures don’t affect production
  • Manages department financial budgeting, forecasting, and expenditures for mechanical system maintenance and projects
  • Provides design input on system changes and expansions
  • Ensures the proper installation and startup of new equipment including commissioning for projects
  • Maintains knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their impact on existing mechanical operating systems
  • Uses an advanced CMMS system for asset management, equipment reliability, labor tracking and system accounting
  • Reviews trends and identifies opportunities to reduce utility usage
  • Develops long term strategies by monitoring mature processes (SPC) and quantifying equipment “end of life” data

 Communication and Collaboration:

  • Coordinates design efforts with all affected groups
  • Communicates new HVAC, cooling and mechanical systems, methods, and technologies
  • Collaborates with Global Facilities on benchmarking and key metrics
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Facilities systems and communicates status to Boise site customers and management
  • Establishes regular, working interaction with peers from all Micron sites
  • Develops trust with customers by providing expert assistance and advice
  • Makes disciplined business-driven decisions by gathering data and team feedback
  • Works with Purchasing and other sites to reduce costs and negotiate terms
  • Establishes and communicates long term strategic goals and direction

  • Knows Micron Technology policies and partners closely with HR

 Successful Candidates must have the following Qualifications:

  • Advanced knowledge of facilities mechanical systems and design
  • Knowledge of state/city/federal requirements and policies for mechanical operating systems 
  • Demonstrated success in previous leadership positions
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various scheduling processes internal and external to Facilities
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Proven ability to drive multiple complex projects to completion
  • Proven ability to communicate and present technical information effectively
  • Proven ability to accurately analyze and interpret data to make data-driven decisions
  • Strong conflict management and negotiation skills
  • Proven ability to develop and coach team members
  • Proven ability to mentor and successfully manage the performance of direct and eventual reports
  • Demonstrated ability to partner successfully with other groups and build strong peer relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and promote technical expertise
  • Proven ability to solicit feedback, accept input, and analyze success/failure
  • Proven ability to identify, understand, and mitigate risk before making critical decisions

Education and Experience: 

  • Required: A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in an engineering or relevant field or equivalent education and 4 years of facilities experience
  • Preferred: Experience in semiconductor front end manufacturing and PE certification
