Head of Regulatory Policy & Strategic Market Design

We have a fantastic opportunity for a driven, strategic, commercial and collaborative leader to head our Regulatory Policy & Strategic Market Design team! Leading a team of market experts, you will report to Centrica’s Group Director of Regulation and Policy and be a key member of the Regulation and Policy Leadership Team whilst supporting Centrica to deliver our ambitious growth and net zero objectives.

You will also be a member of the Extended Leadership Team of Centrica’s Legal, Regulatory Affairs, Ethics & Compliance and Secretariat Function (LRECS). LRECS focusses on providing a diverse and inclusive environment with a strong emphasis on wellbeing and delivering opportunities for growth and personal development.

Location: The role will follow a hybrid working arrangement split between remote working and office working at our Windsor head office (circa 1-2 days per week).

About the Role:

  • The Regulatory Policy & Strategic Market Design team primarily supports three Centrica business units (BUs): Centrica Power, British Gas Energy and New Business and Net Zero, though engages with all commercial leaders across the Group. Looking externally, we engage with Ofgem and Government to enable these business units to invest with confidence.

  • Centrica are particularly focussed on assets, products and services that will help decarbonise Britain’s energy supply. These include solar farms, grid scale batteries, heat pumps and demand side response.

  • You as team leader will set the strategic direction and oversee the top priority regulatory and strategic policy support for the business units in their engagement with Ofgem and the Government. In doing so, you will engage regularly with senior commercial colleagues across the Centrica Group to understand their regulatory risks and opportunities. You will give tactical and strategic advice to commercial colleagues, including on risk. You will regularly engage with Ofgem and Government officials directly, at a senior level, as well as other industry stakeholders.

  • You will support and lead your team in developing compelling solutions to a number of regulatory and public policy challenges including:

    • Retail market regulation, such as the methodology used to set the retail price cap and financial resilience of suppliers.

    • Wholesale electricity market regulation, such as grid connections reform and the UK Government’s Review of Electricity Market Arrangements (REMA).

    • Policies to incentivise residential and business customers to decarbonise their operations, such as grants and market revenue opportunities for low carbon technologies.

  • You will have very strong analytical skills and be able to effectively assess the commercial implications of different regulatory proposals.

  • You will have significant relevant experience – for example having worked in a senior capacity in Government, for a regulator or for a regulated company or consultancy.

  • You will have a high level of personal integrity.
