As Director of Media & Public Relations, you will report to the head of Media & Public Relations within the Enterprise Communications group. You will work collaboratively with senior leaders and subject-matter experts in Technology & Operations and Group Benefits to develop and execute a public-relations strategy that raises awareness of The Hartford’s technology, data and AI-led strategy, as well as our employee-benefits business, including promotion of products and services. You will oversee all media relations for Technology & Operations and Group Benefits. In addition, you’ll be a key member of the issues-management team responsible for responding reactively to media inquiries, providing statements that require executive-leadership approval, and serving as a spokesperson on the company’s behalf.

This role will be based out of the company’s Hartford, Connecticut, headquarters on a hybrid basis (Tuesday-Thursday).

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the development and execution of public relations plans related to Technology & Operations, Group Benefits and other functions as needed.

  • Develop news releases and talking points; aggressively pitch stories; handle interviews of company personnel; and shepherd stories through to completion.

  • Media train and prepare executives and subject matter experts for media interviews.

  • Manage media relations strategy for Technology & Operations and Group Benefits.

  • Manage media relations for significant issues including litigation, legislation, regulatory changes, real estate, jobs and catastrophes. As well as liaison to the social media team.

  • Provide on-site event support.

  • Track latest media coverage and distribute to appropriate stakeholders.

  • Develop media results report for specific initiatives as needed.

  • Manage vendor services as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 4-year degree (Communications or Journalism preferred) or equivalent experience required.

  • A minimum of 8 years of related work experience in the fields of media relations, corporate communications, journalism or public relations required.

  • Experience providing PR support for technology, data and AI-led strategy at a Fortune 500 company or experience as a journalist covering technological innovation, such as Gen AI. 

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully develop and implement integrated communications strategies that advance the business objectives of the organization.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the news media and social media, as well as experience working with local, national and trade reporters on complex matters.

  • A team player with excellent planning and organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and changing priorities.

  • Results-orientated – motivated to achieve high standards and continuous improvement.

  • A grasp of complex issues that can potentially face a Fortune 500 company and an insurer, including experience with financial matters.

  • A confident, strategic thinker who can provide strategic communications and counsel to executive management.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with a strong attention to detail.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$127,120 - $190,680
