About Anthropic

Anthropic’s mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.

As a Trust and Safety policy manager focused on bio, chemical and nuclear security risks, you will be responsible for helping develop and manage policies for our products and services that specifically address potential risks related to the misuse of AI for bio, chemical and nuclear threats.  Safety is core to our mission and as a member of the team, you'll help shape policy creation and development so that our users can safely interact with and build on top of our products in a harmless, helpful, and honest way, while mitigating risks related to the potential misuse of our AI technology for bio, chemical and nuclear threats.

*Important context for this role: In this position you may be exposed to and engage with explicit content spanning a range of topics, including those of a sexual, violent, or psychologically disturbing nature.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop deep subject matter expertise in biosecurity, chemical threats, and nuclear security risks and the potential role of AI in such threats
  • Draft new policies that help govern the responsible use of our models for emerging capabilities and use cases, with a specific focus on preventing the misuse of our technology for bio, chemical and nuclear threats
  • Conduct regular reviews of existing policies to identify and address gaps and ambiguities related to biosecurity, chemical threats and nuclear security risks
  • Iterate on and help build out our comprehensive harm framework, incorporating potential bio, chemical and nuclear threats
  •
  • Update our policies based on feedback from our enforcement team and edge cases that you will review
  • Educate and align internal stakeholders around our policies and our overall approach to product policy
  • Partner with internal and external researchers to better understand our product's limitations and risks related to bio, chemical and nuclear threats, and adapt our policies based on key findings
  • Collaborate with enforcement and detection teams and the Frontier Red Team to establish risk assessment guidelines for identifying and categorizing bio, chemical, and nuclear threats. Monitor and address policy gaps based on violations and edge cases
  • Keep up to date with new and existing AI policy norms and standards, particularly those related to bio, chemical and nuclear security, and use these to inform our decision-making on policy areas

This role will require strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to balance safety and innovation through well-crafted and clearly articulated policies. If you are passionate about developing policies to guide new technology and have expertise in bio, chemical and/or nuclear security risks, we want to hear from you!

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have a passion for or interest in artificial intelligence and ensuring it is developed and deployed safely
  • Have awareness of and an interest in Trust and Safety policies
  • Have expertise in biosecurity, chemical threats and/or nuclear security risks and an understanding of how AI technology could potentially contribute to such threats
  • Demonstrated expertise in stakeholder management, including identifying key stakeholders, building and maintaining strong relationships, and effectively communicating project goals and progress
  • Understand the challenges that exist in developing and implementing policies at scale
  • Love to think creatively about how to use technology in a way that is safe and beneficial, and ultimately furthers the goal of advancing safe AI systems while mitigating risks related to bio, chemical and nuclear threats

The expected salary range for this position is:

Annual Salary:
$200,000$240,000 USD

Logistics

Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.

Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.

We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed.  Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.

How we're different

We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact — advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI — rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.

The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.

Come work with us!

Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
