Senior Director, Pharmacy Services Strategy & Innovation
Reporting directly to the Vice President, Pharmacy Services & Strategic Initiatives, the Senior Director, Strategic Initiatives provides direction and support to a number of growth and business initiatives for our Pharmacy Services portfolio
You will focus on growth opportunities for pharmacy services at Shoppers Drug Mart and Loblaws. In this role you must juggle multiple priorities, handle scope and tight timelines, and will need to navigate through change and uncertainty with a diverse set of executive and senior external collaborators.
Primary Responsibilities
- Identifies new growth initiatives, develops business case, and gets partner engagement, approval, supporting HR, Information Technology and Finance, compliance training functions) to ensure efforts are aligned to optimize the businesses and awareness across all units
- Analyzes deal terms to develop the right business model, and leads contract negotiations, with support from legal
- Lead strategic project planning, achievement tracking, risk management, partner management, facilitation of workshops, design and implementation of new processes and project training, change management and hand over activities
- Help validate and produce appropriate baseline project plans and templates. Work with appropriate parties to plan project resource requirements and map key dependencies
- Coordinate and prepare senior-level presentations and reports (e.g., Board, Management Committee, IMC, Steering Committees
- Evaluate and analyze Enterprise level macro policies and risks involving regulatory (e.g. Pharmacare), commercial (e.g. contract disputes), and competitive (e.g. new entrants/disruptors)
- Support the evolution and ongoing adjustment of the Enterprise Pharmacy CYP and MYP annual processes
- Represent the Business in meetings and ensure decisions support overall operating model and strategy
- Lead execution of important team meetings and offsite, gathering action items and ensuring prompt follow-ups
- Provide and implement continuous improvement programs that will result in operational efficiencies and realized annual cost savings
- Monitor, develop, and implement operational standards to ensure policies, procedures and practices respond to changing conditions in the marketplace
Skills, Experience & Education
- Strong Financial knowledge of P/L development and analysis using complex programs
- Strong project management, communication and problem-solving skills
- Proven experience leading complex projects in a highly matrixed organization and working in a fast paced growth environment and embraces to change
- Ability to develop partnerships through cross-functional teams across multiple lines of business and with external partners
- Requires extensive knowledge and skill in multiple disciplines to be able to integrate them effectively and understand and interpret conflicting goals and needs of diverse groups
- Ability to create innovative solutions and efficiencies for continuous improvement.
- Capable of making highly complex decisions involving multiple factors and interests to develop new models and processes to meet future needs within a framework of corporate policy, general direction and legislated compliance
- Strong analytics skills are required
- Exceptional organizational skills, very flexible and capable of juggling multiple demands/collaborators
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.)

- This position requires a superior level of initiative and judgment to organize and prioritize tasks, workload, and projects. Courtesy, tact, and subtlety are required in dealing with colleagues in every day working relationships. Additionally:
- Broad knowledge of Pharmacy operations and environment
- Consistent record of commitment and producing outstanding results
- Knowledge in business process improvement techniques
- Ability to summarize sophisticated data into key insights and define opportunities
- Understanding of effective market strategies, marketing tools and research methods
- Project Management tools and software experience
- Expert in the use of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Visio, etc.)
- Excellent written and oral communication, Interpersonal and presentation skills
- Demonstrated experience presenting and working with C-Level Executives
- Track record of demonstrated success in execution of large complex tight timeline initiatives with Federal government, Provincial government, and commercial partners
- Handling a P&L of a product line, division, or business valued at $10-50 M
- Experience with leading a team
- Role Requirement:
- 5+ years in a Senior strategic business or marketing role and/or operational leadership in pharmaceutical and/or pharmacy
- Post-secondary undergraduate (finance, economics, commerce) and/or graduate education preferred
- Capable of facilitating (design sessions, conflict resolutions, brainstorming, etc.)
- Solid expertise in the development and roll-out of transformation programs
- Demonstrated leadership experience in consulting, implementation, or development projects.
- Comfortable moving from ‘Big Picture’ critical thinking to detailed execution seamlessly
- Knowledge of Loblaw systems, data sources, and metrics
- Independent decision-making, ability to think critically and influence change
