Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)

We are looking for a Project Systems Specialist to join our team in Toronto.

The successful candidate will perform system design, signaling design, analysis, modelling and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems; develop and define system design features to meet Customer requirements; analyze and evaluate designs to verify compliance with system technical requirements; develop and define System, Subsystems requirements; develop block design, interlocking control tables, and application database for Software subsystems; and analyze and evaluate system performance and prepare associated technical contract deliverable.

The incumbent is accountable for performing the design work correctly, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages. The work is typically defined by the Work Package Manager, then reviewed and approved by the Systems Architect and/or Manager. The System Engineer typically works with a team of engineers to define what will be designed, how it will perform and how it will be determined that it is working correctly. As Project System Design Specialist you may also be assigned to lead a group of system engineers on a project or product. This would include reviewing correcting and mentoring other system engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

TECHNICAL:

  • Prepares and supports customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, and architecture design.
  • Converts Customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.
  • Similarly creates new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfil customer requirements.
  • Prepares system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing and decomposing modelling, refining customer requirements and typical train control domain requirements.
  • Prepares Operational Concept Document.
  • Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, estimation, etc.
  • Presents technical design and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise, and non-ambiguous terms.
  • Defines or proposes updates of processes and standards covering the work and its products based on the knowledge of systems engineering and/or his technical specialty.
  • Operational design limits are evaluated and defined;
  • Ensures the system design team has strong working relationships with Software, Hardware, Safety and ITV groups.
  • Develops a strategy for development of the full solution on a project(s) and leads the system team to deliver based on this strategy
  • Ensures and encourages the system team to follow the development process
  • Strategy of development not only accounts for system development work but considers the activities of other teams to ensure the end-to-end solution can be developed in an efficient manner 
  • Evaluates workload to ensure the team has the resources and skills to complete the development and will escalate any concerns to system management.
  • Has ability to identify development risks and can create/implement a plan to mitigate these risks

SAFETY:

  • Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount.
  • Ensures that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects.

MANAGEMENT:

  • Supervises contractors and other systems specialists, by defining their work, coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress and directing them on priorities.
  • Proposes work package estimates and descriptions based on the knowledge of the work and project requirements.
  • Leads technical discussions, presents technical solutions and regular status reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Mentor other systems engineers by coaching them on how and what to prepare, monitoring their progress. Providing technical guidance and directing them on priorities.
  • Works closely with other Work Package Managers and the project team to ensure the system team has the inputs needed to perform the design and ensures the system team is providing the necessary outputs/support to other disciplines
  • Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives.
  • Engages other leaders in the organization to ensure the strategy for design on the project/product is consistent with other initiatives in the organization and is capitalizing on other project/product designs.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's of Science in related one of the disciplines: Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, System Design Engineering or other

  • Senior level expertise in URS Systems or minimum 8 years with similar system complexity

  • Referent/coach on specialized engineering skills of the CBTC domain

  • Communications based train control

  • Railway Signaling

  • Requirements Engineering

  • Systems Design

  • System Modelling

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Strong application (automated train control systems) domain knowledge & Knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices

  • Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods and tools

  • Knowledge of systems development life cycle

  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills

  • Good presentation skills

  • Ability to sell/defend products to customers with differing levels of knowledge about automated systems

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Experience in using DOORS, Polarion, etc.

  • Rail Signaling knowledge
