Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Create and manage motion control actuator requirements for braking, steering and/or propulsion through the full requirement life cycle
  • Drive architecture discussions focusing on motion control performance, fault tolerance and reliability
  • Evaluate electrical, mechanical and software architecture of the motion control system, and contribute to hardware and software design reviews
  • Coordinate motion control actuator integration to the self-driving system from prototype development to fleet deployment
  • Investigate field issues and bugs with both internal and external partners
  • Sign-off motion control actuators for driver-less operation via a variety of testing and analyses

You have:

  • 3 or more years of experience designing or testing electro-mechanical systems, particularly automotive, aerospace or other safety critical systems
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant Engineering or a related field (including ME, EE, CS, Robotics, Controls, Aerospace, etc.) or equivalent practical experience
  • SW development experience (including C/C++, Python, or MATLAB)
  • Strong foundation in system engineering principles such as requirements definition, formal verification and validation methods, and simulation

We prefer:

  • Experience working at an automotive OEM or supplier, specifically on motion control actuation systems
  • Experience working on ADAS or other self-driving automotive systems
  • Experience working with standard automotive development processes including project gateways, phases etc.
  • Familiarity with automotive functional safety (ISO 26262)
