Position Summary

This intern will support the Modeling Innovation and Strategy (MIS) which is a new team inside of Integrated System Planning (ISP) whose focus is on modeling and tools improvement.  ISP is a new Xcel Energy system planning organization designed to create mid to long term transmission, generation, distribution and gas plans to help the company achieve its goals of a carbon free system by 2050. 

MIS is specifically focused on the creation of tools and automation to help other areas of the ISP team.  The team is comprised of data scientists and experienced modelers that create stochastic models of our production cost, resource expansion, transmission expansion, gas and distribution models.  The team also deals with the creation of new tech modeling, data pipelining, and integrates with the wider Xcel Energy data community. 

This Internship will be working out of either Minneapolis, MN or Denver, CO and will be full-time during the summer starting May 2025. Potential to continue part-time during the 2025 - 2026 school year

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Planning staff to support the Modeling and Analytics team.

  • Code Machine Learning Models ETL pipeline and other various computer programing work.

  • Help to create a generation model input/output database on our Databricks platform that is accessible to all planning areas of ISP. This information is used to create a data pipeline to automatically create model inputs to replace the current process of spreadsheet manipulation by individual users. 

  • Other Databricks/Data Engineering tasks as required.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Data Science or other related field.

  • Python and/or other programming languages

  • Engineering classes are nice to have but not essential

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.60 to $27.20 per hour
