About the Role

The Engineering Rotational Development Program (ERDP) is all about developing the next generation of industry leaders and technical experts. The purpose of Caterpillar’s Engineering Rotational Development Program is to harness your ability and further develop you through rotational assignments and learning opportunities so that you may not only fulfill your career goals but provide excellent service to Caterpillar and its customers.  Our Engineering Rotational Development Program enhances the experience of engineering graduates transitioning from student to full-time engineer.

What You Will Do

You’ll join a team with diverse project responsibilities and have valuable networking opportunities with all levels of Caterpillar employees. This is an entry level engineering position that begins with a 12-18-month long development rotational program focused on building technical abilities in the following area:

The Caterpillar Virtual Product Development Systems & Platforms team lives at the intersection of engineering and information technology.  One of the team’s major responsibilities is enterprise ownership of the High-Performance Computing (HPC) capability for engineering modeling and simulation.  The HPC Operations & Support Team has an opening for an engineer who will be responsible for HPC System administration of a cloud-based computing technical infrastructure.  This role is part of a globally distributed team that shares responsibility for achieving excellence in its operational metrics for performance, availability, and user support. 

Duties

  • Configure, deploy, and maintain the Linux Cluster Hardware, HPC Software applications suite, associated Storage, and network infrastructure. Administration of the hosting and management systems that enables HPC.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshoot end user issues related to HPC hardware and Solver applications. Evaluate problematic job performance and perform application testing.
  • Work on HPC Operational and Strategic Projects.
  • Ensure compliance to enterprise IT security and technology controls.
  • Evaluate and implement new tools and methods for improved operations and service delivery.

Degree Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or Mechanical Engineering

Other Requirements:

  • Minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0/4.0 (no rounding) at current institution
  • Expected graduation date December 2023 - August 2025
  • Must be willing to travel and relocate domestically
  • Good Functional knowledge of Linux and working knowledge of Linux and Windows Server System Administration
  • Strong Scripting capability in one or more languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell, shell/bash)
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals, Ethernet Networking and Storage

Top candidates will also have:

  • Demonstrated experience with cloud-based computing resource deployment (e.g., Azure, AWS)
  • Ability to write efficient, well documented code in Python
  • Technology related certifications.
  • Involvement with a campus design/competition teams or related experience
  • Project or Team Leadership experience
  • Previous technical internship/co-op or relevant experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
