Summary of Job Duties:

**This is for 14 hours per week.**

The Medical Laboratory Scientist I performs routine and specialized laboratory testing in areas such as hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and blood banking. Under general supervision, this role ensures the accuracy and reliability of test results used for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Sciences OR an approved ASCP discipline (30 semester hours in biology and chemistry, which may be obtained within, or in addition to, the Bachelor's).

• ASCP or another accrediting agency certified or eligible (Certification must be obtained within one year of employment).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Previous clinical laboratory experience

• ASCP certification

Responsibilities:

• Conduct analysis of blood, urine, spinal fluid, body fluids and other biological samples to determine presence of normal and abnormal components in assigned section(s).

• Perform quality controls or quality check materials and perform corrective action as required.

• Enter test results and other data related to analysis and communication of results into relevant computer information systems or other document archival systems. Provide technical information about specimen collection, sample transport, sample identification, required documents, test methods and other related technical information to RN, physicians or laboratory clients.

• Use laboratory computer systems to order tests, generate results, generate reports, document results and communications, interpret results, and other lab duties related to inventory, testing method verifications and quality control.

• The core laboratory uses multiple information systems including Microsoft Office software programs, instrument specific programs, automation line software and middleware, programs for test interpretation, server databases, laboratory information system, quality control programs, inventory control software, document control and online programs related to employee continuing education and training.

• Perform daily set-up and maintenance on lab analyzers and automation line used to process samples.

• Operate equipment used in analysis such as spectrophotometers, analyzers, microscopes, slidestainers, diluters, and computer controlled high volume analyzers, mixers, rotators, pipettes.

• Perform basic troubleshooting on equipment used to perform testing. Document function checks of temperature dependent equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, incubators, water baths, heat blocks.

• Daily quality control review for assigned instruments.

• Organize and clean workspaces.

• Ensure adequate supplies required for daily operations are available by restocking inventory, preparing reagents, rotating stock as required.

• Communicate with clinics, physicians and external staff regarding sample integrity issues and/or critical values.

• Maintain current knowledge of hospital policy, state, federal and other regulatory requirements.

• Maintain certifications, continuing education, annual education and/or training as required for position.

• Perform proficiency testing required for accreditation.

• Other duties as assigned.
