About the Role & Team:

The OneExperience team within eBay’s Core Product Design organization is a comprehensive, cross-functional design team excelling in taste-making, strategy, design systems, visual design, experience design, content creation, and motion design. Dedicated to creating cohesive and innovative design solutions, we focus on evolving our product and brand experience to achieve higher levels of consistency and innovation for our current and future eBay customers.

Evo is eBay’s product design system. It is a catalyst to synthesize previous design systems into a unified eBay experience across all platforms. This system modernizes the eBay experience, while thoughtfully retaining what is most familiar to customers.

As the Head of Design Systems for eBay's product design group, your main focus will be to spearhead our design systems across our products, guiding the team in defining the system and championing design excellence throughout our product, design, and engineering teams. Another important part of your role will be to work closely with domain design teams driving key horizontal and vertical product design experiences through to delivery based on company priorities.

Additionally, you'll collaborate closely with design leaders, product management, brand, marketing, and engineering teams to ensure the successful implementation of Evo and product experiences. To thrive in this position, you must possess a highly creative approach, adept at transforming business needs into captivating solutions centered on the customer. Additionally, possessing technical expertise in systems design is crucial, as it plays a pivotal role in shaping our overall tech strategy. Adaptability is key, as you'll need to excel in an open and collaborative environment. Furthermore, you should have the ability to conceptualize experiences in the abstract and transform them into tangible design outcomes.

This individual should be enthusiastic about pushing creative boundaries to shape our design language and enhance eBay as a magical, memorable and scalable shopping destination for enthusiasts. As the leader, you will oversee a team of design systems designers responsible for eBay’s Design System, Evo, across all our products. In this role, you will be tasked with presenting comprehensive design solutions to executive leadership and the board of directors. 

This role reports to the Senior Director of Design in the Core Product Organization. 


What You Will Accomplish

  • Leadership – You'll work with your peers in Product Design, Product Management, Engineering, User Research, Brand Design, and more to settle a shared vision and roadmap for our design system and the delivery of product features and experiences. 

  • Strategy - You'll play a pivotal role in shaping the strategy for our design systems efforts, ensuring alignment with our product objectives. The standardized design choices implemented in our design systems will exert a significant and far-reaching influence across all our platforms.

  • Craft & Stewardship - Collaborating with your team and the wider product design organization, you'll serve as a beacon of design craftsmanship and quality across our products. Your goal is to shape, influence, and enhance future quality standards through systematic approaches. You will improve existing standards and create new frameworks and methodologies that bring impact to the customer.

  • Partnership - You'll collaborate closely with design systems engineering leadership to foster alignment and ensure high-quality standards between your team and their engineering counterparts.

  • Management - You'll manage a team of exceptional IC designers, as well as, disciplinary specialists as required. Your role will involve providing project feedback and career guidance to team members, while also nurturing opportunities for their professional advancement.

  • Hiring– You'll partner with our recruiting team to find, attract, interview, and hire new designers for your team, across systems roles and including design specialists.

What You Will Bring:

  • 10+ years in the product design industry with and BS Degree in interaction design, HCI, industrial design, graphic design, visual communications or equivalent. Experience in leading design systems and teams, as well as launching product experiences that delight, innovate and scale by turning complex problems into simple engaging customer experiences. You’ve managed creative teams of 5+ people.

  • Experience building and shipping design systems across a variety of platforms.

  • You value high-quality, well-crafted visual design and care about the details.

  • Experienced at promoting alignment across product design and product engineering counterparts.

  • Experience influencing other designers and cross-functional teams to drive cohesion, innovation and efficiency.

  • Experience working in large global teams with many moving parts.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment in California, Washington, or New York is expected in the range below.

$168,400 - $262,900

Base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including location, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a target bonus and restricted stock units (as applicable) in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO and parental leave). Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.

If hired, employees will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
