Job Description:

Sun Life is seeking an Assistant Vice President (“AVP”) to join our Corporate Development team based in Toronto. Corporate Development is responsible for the execution of corporate transactions, which include the acquisition and divestiture of companies, operations or books of business, minority equity investments, as well as the formation of joint ventures and strategic partnerships.

The AVP will join a high-performing team and play a key part in developing and executing on both short and long-term growth strategies across all of Sun Life’s businesses globally. They will act as an objective advisor regarding the strategic fit, valuation, and structuring of various organic and inorganic opportunities. This role is expected to provide overall project/deal management and, where appropriate, to work with the leadership teams of the various business units.  Finally, the role is responsible for developing and maintaining best practices regarding M&A activities.

What will you do:

  • Lead all stages of a project/transaction's life cycle, collaborating with internal functional partners and business group leads as well as interfacing with counterparties and external advisors.
  • Identify, research and analyze potential companies that could be suitable acquisition targets. Evaluate the strategic fit of these companies, including discussions with the relevant business units.
  • Develop detailed financial model and valuation of target businesses while incorporating considerations and recommendations from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead M&A due diligence activities along with a deal team and identify mitigation strategies to minimize deal risk. Analyze proposed deal structure and provide recommendations to optimize the transaction. Review and provide recommendations on term sheets and legal documentation.
  • Provide integration/separation oversight as required.
  • Contribute to internal projects or other organic strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare Executive Team and Board presentations and discussion materials which capture complex financial analysis, as well as qualitative analysis around a project/transaction or a market opportunity. Support Executive Team discussions around quantitative and qualitative analysis.

What do you need to succeed:

  • The ideal candidate for this role would bring 10+ years of experience, ideally in investment banking, private equity, or corporate development.
  • Advanced knowledge of M&A valuation approaches, due diligence best practices, and deal structuring.
  • Direct transactional experience within the financial services industry (e.g., insurance or asset management) would represent a significant asset, however, is not required.
  • Strong relationship management skills with internal and external partners, clients, vendors, etc.
  • Organized and detail-oriented; ability to work in situations with changing priorities and multiple simultaneous assignments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; experience presenting analyses to management and ability to lead and drive initiatives.
  • Undergraduate degree with a focus in Finance or Commerce; attainment of a MBA, CFA, or CBV, or a combination of the preceding, is desirable.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
