Job Summary

Introba is seeking an Associate Principal, Mechanical Engineer to join our team in our Toronto, Canada office.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

  • Leads, manages, and mentors a team of mechanical designers to deliver major projects on a timely basis with quality and integrity in accordance with Introba’s best practice procedures.

  • This role anticipates initially integrating with an existing team, and helping to lead its organic growth.  The existing team includes 10 staff ranging from Junior Mechanical Designer to Senior Mechanical Principal, generally focused on Institutional projects.  A growth target has been set to double the team by both headcount and revenue over the next 5 years (by 2029).  Growth is anticipated to come through a combination of increase in our existing representation in Educational, Science & Technology, and Civic/Cultural sectors; in addition to strategic targeted growth in mission-aligned Commercial and Mixed-Use sectors where projects include targets for high-performance and sustainability.

  • The responsibilities of the role include a balance of:

    • Operations (including setting labour budgets and revenue targets, forecasting and reporting, direct supervision and performance reviews, compliance and training),

    • Technical production (including project management, oversight of all aspects of design of Mechanical, Plumbing, and Fire Suppression systems, advising clients on project procurement and cost management, and construction contract administration), and

    • Sales/business development (including taking responsibility as primary contact with key clients, for conflict resolution, and developing pipeline opportunities)

  • Leadership role within existing Toronto-Mechanical Team, which is part of the Canadian Mechanical Institutional (CMI) Business Unit including Calgary, Kelowna, and Victoria.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 10+ years design experience in major commercial and/or institutional projects including both new construction and major renovations/retrofits.

  • Has previously led teams including at least 5 direct reports.

  • University degree, college/technology diploma in Mechanical Engineering 

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng or PL.Eng), or Applied Science Technologist (AScT) designations are highly preferred.

  • LEED® Accredited professional designation and Passive House experience is desired.

  • Community leadership and positive external profile (e.g. representation at conferences, whitepapers, thought leadership, pro-bono work, etc.) are desired.

Key Accountabilities

  • Active role in work tracking, securing, and enrolling new project work focused in Ontario and Eastern Canada.

  • Engaging new clients, supporting, and promoting Introba as a multidisciplinary service provider (including representing disciplines outside of Mechanical) on new project opportunities.

  • Supporting and defending existing repeat clients, strategically transitioning key contact roles from existing senior leaders.

  • Fully responsible and accountable for all aspects of their design team, including employee. performance, reporting, mentorship, technical training, compensation, and advancement.

  • Works with Introba’s Management Team to control and coordinate business development, sales/marketing, team targets, team personnel, technical design and related activities 

  • Develops, establishes, and administers procedures and systems pertaining to team management matters.

  • Prepares workload, sales forecasts, and team resources/schedule for administrative and managerial functions. 

  • Upholds and maintains Introba standards for design and technical delivery, and will be responsible for engineering, specifications, documentation, standardization, quality assurance, cost and value analysis and the broader aspects of mechanical building services. 

  • Serves as the principal liaison with selected clients and/or major projects.

  • Client satisfaction

    • repeat work with existing clients.

    • expand Introba’s current client basis in institutional and complex/mixed-use commercial sectors.

  • Total WIP and project write downs not to exceed 5% of annual NSR for team.

  • Turnover of team members - Regrettable Departures below 10%

  • Accounts receivables for projects to have AR DSO less than 90 days, targeting 75-day average.

  • Seeks to exceed minimum profitability as required for sector or service line set within yearly budget plans for team.

  • Achieve budget DLM, chargeability and Productivity Factors for team.

  • All projects are planned and maintained in central project management reporting system (Deltek).
