Job Summary

Sam Schwartz, a TYLin company, is seeking a Director of Planning for the Northeast Region to be based in our Philadelphia or New Jersey office. This position will be part of a dynamic team that provides a range of planning services for public, private, and non-profit clients, including corridor studies, safety analysis and planning, transit planning, strategic planning, community-wide multi-modal transportation plans, and complete streets concept development.

The Director will be part of a cross-disciplinary team of consultants covering planning, urban design, and transportation engineering. They will work with the National Director of Planning to grow the planning practice in the Philadelphia and New Jersey markets and build a local team of planners to support current and future work. The candidate will be part of a cohort of Directors in other offices, with the opportunity to share resources for projects, business development, and staff development.

Ideal candidates will be solutions-focused; articulate and client-facing, with the ability to communicate persuasively and develop positive team dynamics; and have demonstrated experience leading complex projects. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to understand and anticipate the larger client and business needs while successfully managing day-to-day project demands. Experience with transportation safety planning and analysis is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

In this position, the successful candidate will both lead and support a wide range of projects and business development activities by performing various tasks including: 

  • Supporting the growth strategy for the transportation planning business unit in the northeast region, with an initial focus on Philadelphia and New Jersey
  • Active involvement with relevant industry organizations and participation in conferences and other industry events
  • Authoring thought leadership (articles, blog posts, etc.) on these topics
  • Identifying new business opportunities and supporting business development
  • Representing the company at industry events
  • Leading proposal development and contributing to interview presentations 
  • Leading interdisciplinary teams on a variety of transportation planning projects
  • Developing and implementing QA/QC processes
  • Managing project budgets and schedules
  • Maintaining strong client relationships
  • Writing and reviewing technical reports and developing presentations
  • Developing and implementing processes improve project delivery and deliverables

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience managing transportation projects, including management of staff, budgets, and clients
  • Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff
  • Understanding of, and interest in, marketing, networking, and business development
  • Knowledge of industry standards (e.g. AASHTO, MUTCD, HCM, NACTO, and other guidelines)
  • Flexibility to work on-site and non-standard business hours occasionally, must be able to travel

Requirements

Candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Ten years experience in the transportation planning field
  • Master’s degree in urban planning, transportation engineering, or related field
  • AICP desirable but not required.
