Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Stripe Terminal helps our users extend their online presence to the physical world. The Terminal team’s mission is to make it as easy for businesses to accept in-person payments as the Stripe API has done for online payments. Stripe was founded to make it easier for developers to accept payments. We’ve solved a small part of that problem, but our ambition is to go much further.

What you’ll do

We are looking for a world class tax specialist who loves solving complex problems with cross functional teams to come up with and implement elegant product solutions that satisfy Stripe’s tax obligations.  In this function, you will be on the tax advisory team supporting Stripe products and initiatives, with a focus on our physical goods business such as Stripe Terminal.

Responsibilities

  • Be the tax point of contact for end-to-end product launch readiness review, actively collaborating with a wide variety of Stripe teams including Logistics, Finance, product, Engineering, Partnerships, Legal and Accounting, on a range of tax issues related to product development, all while having a strong moral compass and integrity.
  • Identify various tax issues related to product launches (e.g. indirect tax, information reporting, transfer pricing, income tax.), work closely with tax subject matter experts to analyze them, and deliver tax requirements to the product teams.
  • Help draft and implement policies and procedures for cross-functional partners on key tax issues and requirements impacting product operations. Ensure existing policies and procedures are up to date based on the current tax laws.
  • Support internal user facing teams, such as Account Managers, Sales, User Ops and others to address product needs and user queries as it relates to tax issues.
  • Be responsible for reviewing and providing guidance on external user communications drafted by Marketing and/or User Ops, representing the tax team.  .
  • Assist with other tax projects as needed.

Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • 6-8+ years of cross-border tax experience at an accounting/law firm and/or in-house (financial services industry or at another payment processor), with a very strong preference for individuals with a combination of both accounting/law firm and in-house experience.
  • A  good overall understanding of various tax subject matter areas, including indirect tax, information reporting and withholding, transfer pricing, income tax reporting, controversy, etc. , and experience operationalizing those rules at scale.
  • Exceptional time-management and project-management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  You should be able to adjust your communication style based on your audience (users, product teams, advisors, etc.).  In this role you will be required to translate tax laws into tax requirements that product and engineer teams will need to incorporate into Stripe products.
  • The ability to prioritize projects in a fast-changing environment.
  • A desire to tackle complex problems!
  • Integrity, empathy, humility and some comedy.

Nice to have

  • Experience dealing with tax issues related to global physical goods operations (supply chain operations, inventory management, 3PL relationships, etc.).
  • An advanced degree or professional qualification (CPA, JD or equivalent, Masters in Tax, or LLM or equivalent) in tax or law.
  • Experience working in a high-growth, rapidly scaling environment.
  • Experience working in technology, payments, or financial services.
  • A willingness to work with a diverse crew of tax nerds who care deeply about Stripe’s tax issues and each other.

“Nice to have” really means “nice to have”. It’s completely possible that you don’t have any of these and are still a great fit for the team.
