Position Summary

Position is in the Weight Loss & Metabolism Program (Bariatric Surgery & Medical Weight Management). This is a M-F clinic position at our Center for Outpatient Health building located on the Barnes-Jewish Hospital properties in the Central West End of St. Louis.

This position provides direct patient care and education for patients receiving treatments, examinations, surgeries, etc., in a medical office according to established procedures.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Utilizes the nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a plan of patient care.
  • Provides patient care, which may include administering medication, performing procedures and monitoring patient status in accordance with approved nursing practice.
  • Provides appropriate counsel and education to patients/family regarding disease process and symptom management.
  • Maintains medical records requiring appropriate and timely recording of patient information.
  • Consults with members of the health care team, adjusting nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
  • Assists the health care provider with examinations, procedures, prescription refills and other processes related to direct patient care.
  • Maintains required skills and competencies and participates in educational programs, staff meetings and in services such as CPR as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Daily Activities

  • Attend clinic approximately two days per week. Assist physician with back house clinic duties including preparing charts, scheduling tests, transcribing orders, and scheduling general surgeries.
  • Triage patient phone calls and MyChart messages.
  • Complete Family Medical Leave (FMLA) paperwork as needed.
  • Medication refills.
  • Manage assigned physician’s incoming faxes.
  • Co-lead weekly pre-operative education classes to patients undergoing bariatric surgery using outlined PowerPoint presentation.
  • Assist with moderating Bi-Monthly post-operative support group meetings (meetings are virtual and can be done from home).

Training and Support

  • Train side by side with registered nurse physicians, nurse practitioners and program’s supervisor.
  • Will receive live virtual Epic (EHR) training.
  • Will receive training guide binder with detailed instructions on assigned tasks.
  • Physician, Nurse Practitioner and Nurse coordinator support during all work hours.

Location/Schedule

  • Flexibility: Ability to work from home one day a week (after probationary period of 6 months).
  • Hours: Normally Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (no weekends or major holidays); throughout the year there are quality and accreditation meetings prior to clinic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of related medical experience.
  • Working knowledge of general nursing theory and practice with the ability to recognize and interpret symptoms/conditions.
  • Ability to function in new and emergent situations.

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current RN licensure in the state of Missouri and/or Illinois depending on location in accordance with Compact Act.
  • Basic Life Support certification (Online BLS certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the BLS requirements).

Salary Range

$56,200.00 - $96,100.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
