This job responds to assigned departmental maintenance needs and is responsible for the execution of repairs or replacement of affected equipment in assigned area(s). Responds to and repairs specialty systems, accelerating requests as appropriate to leader for distribution. Refers requests beyond scope of position to Facilities leader appropriately for distribution. Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, and troubleshoots the electro/mechanical systems utilizing specialized test equipment and hand/power tools.

Education

Required - High School diploma or equivalent

Preferred - Trade school or company school

Work Experience

Required - 2 years of experience in Commercial, Industrial or Hospital Maintenance or completion of the Ochsner Apprenticeship program

Preferred - Healthcare experience

Certifications

Required - Valid driver’s license in the state of residence

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Experience with all hand and power tools
  • Must be familiar with a wide range of skilled crafts including, but not limited to, plumbing, electrical, HVAC-R and carpentry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a can-do attitude.
  • Must be mechanically inclined with the ability to multi-task and work with minimal supervision. 
  • Working knowledge of state, parish, and building codes, as well as JCAHO standards.
  • Self-directed with the ability handle the mental and physical stress/pressure to complete all jobs, including emergencies. 
  • Must be able to work indoors, outdoors, and in restricted spaces for extended periods of time.
  • Basic knowledge of reading, writing and understanding mechanical and electrical symbolisms to properly interpret blueprints, schematics specifications and mechanical drawings.
  • Must be able to properly handle power and hand tools required to perform job duties effectively.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply effective judgment when performing job duties.
  • Must be able to work on-call for emergencies and extended hours.

Job Duties

  • Performs general inspections, troubleshooting and repairs of minor electrical, mechanical, and plumbing items within the hospital or clinic setting. Examples of works may include but not limited to:  unclogging plumbing lines, replacing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tile, repair leaking faucets, and painting touch-up.
  • Follows up on completed assignments ensuring equipment is working appropriately.
  • Responds to and repairs specialty systems, such as, and not limited to, the nurse call system, fire alarm system, television system, medical gas system, and the ceiling system.
  • Completes preventive maintenance inspections in accordance to scheduled checkpoints and maintains documentation appropriately.
  • Assists with any maintenance on associated equipment within assigned area(s)
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Assists other Hospital and Clinic departments with daily maintenance and support services as needed Will assist with repairs and upkeep of facilities structures and building systems
  • In the event of severe weather emergencies or disaster, personnel will be assigned a work area and remain onsite throughout the duration of the severe weather or disaster.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Heavy Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible.

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, but exposure or potential for exposure may occur.

The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms.  The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.
