The Director of EHS Governance & Compliance Excellence will partner with the Senior Director of Global EHS, with support of subject matter experts and regional EHS teams, to develop a Center of EHS Excellence by implementing formalized comprehensive governance processes and mechanisms supporting the Food Safety, Animal Health, R&D, and Genomics operations globally.  They will establish EHS technical standards, risk assessment strategies, and launch regulatory auditing programs for all global Neogen operations, with a focus on continuous improvement.    

This role is a key leadership position for guiding global EHS technical excellence, risk management solutions, creating Injury & Illness tracking mechanisms, providing solutions to complex technical issues, and driving EHS management system deployment.

The individual is a constant learner, staying ahead of industry trends, and keeps the team informed of upcoming regulatory changes.  They are an impactful communicator effective at collaborating through various channels to drive timely and impactful results to complex problems.

They will be an SME in the following areas:  Compliance Auditing, Industrial Hygiene practices, Flammable Materials, Ergonomics, BSL & Laboratory Safety, OSHA Recordkeeping, Chemical Safety, Warehouse & Distribution, and EHS six sigma initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a robust global EHS Management system including data analytics, inspection & compliance tracking, OSHA I&I recordkeeping, action tracking, permit management, etc.
  • Provide technical compliance and safety guidance to global EHS teams and company scientists on complex high-risk mitigation.
  • Develops global compliance mechanisms to measure and drive regulatory compliance and KPI record keeping improvements.
  • Champion creation of global EHS procedures and standards in establishing goals in the areas of occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental compliance.
  • Create key global processes that utilize continuous improvement, lean six sigma principles, reduce risk, and eliminate severe injuries.
  • Develops a Global EHS audit program and governance processes. Create and launch an EHS Risk Assessment process for all locations.
  • Develop EHS processes to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and Neogen EHS standards, to eliminate or control EHS risks in the workplace, and prevent employee injuries and illnesses.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of Neogen EHS Training programs.
  • Monitor and trend Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to determine progress against key EHS targets, Leading & Lagging Indicators, and Neogen I&I goals.
  • Maintain proficiency in international, federal and state EHS regulations to ensure operational compliance.
  • Collaborates with site and regional EHS teams to troubleshooting and deploying safety tactics to lower or minimize risk.
  • Responsible for building a culture that hires, grows & develops talent and enables high performing teams.
  • Externally benchmark Neogen EHS processes with industry best practices to foster an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Provide Neogen EHS with options, opportunities, and tools that utilizes the latest technology and tech-savvy options to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an EHS discipline or other related field (ie. environmental science, engineering, biology, chemistry, etc.).
  • Minimum 15+ years of continuous leadership experience as a true EHS professional in pharmaceutical, chemical, biotech related, or specific heavy industrial.
  • Required:  In-depth experience using or creating EHS databases, EHS Mgt. Systems, PowerBI, or similar digital tools to measure performance and identify trends;  Ability to efficiently create tracking & trending mechanisms, pivot tables, and high quality charts/graphs visuals for executive teams, utilizing leading and lagging data required. Note:  Experience launching an EHS Mgt. Systems a plus.
  • Must have “expert level” knowledge of EHS standards, OSHA recordkeeping, and regulatory reporting requirements;  Expertise with OSHA and NFPA regulations required, with a working knowledge of EPA, DOT, FDA, and other applicable global regulations.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with regulations pertaining to:  combustible dust, flammable liquids, machine guarding, powered industrial trucks, laboratory standards, life safety code, chemical safety, and industrial hygiene practices.
  • Must have experience directly leading multiple locations (10+), managing multiple direct reports, and working with global teams.
  • Excellent organizational, judgment, and analytical skills with the ability to THINK BIG, earn trust, dive deep, and deliver results.
  • Strong experience in complex EHS program/project management, within a highly matrixed global environment.
  • Exceptional communicator and collaborative partner with internal operations, corporate functions, business leadership, legal counsel, and regulators.
  • Strong business sense and ability to influence, lead, and mentor others.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally 25-50%, as needed.
