Job Description:

Under the authority of the Director of Legal Affairs the Legal Counsel will perform the functions of legal advisor to the entities of Beneva, primarily in disability, life and health insurance files across Ontario, Western and Atlantic Canada. The incumbent will also perform the functions of legal advisor to the entities of Beneva.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide practical, business-oriented advice across Ontario, Western and Atlantic Canada on a wide range of insurance, pre-litigation and compliance matters.

  • Draft legal opinions and advise various Beneva departments, branches and vice-presidencies on all legal issues mainly concerning life and health insurance, annuities or other related areas.

  • Oversee the approval of new insurance product offerings across the enterprise.

  • Participate in the drafting or revision of various contracts relating mainly to life and health insurance products.

  • Proactively monitor and report on emerging legal and regulatory trends in Canadian common law jurisdictions impacting insurance.

  • Represent Beneva in various industry working groups.

  • Participate in corporate legislative update meetings.

  • Mentor and coach junior lawyers.

  • Perform other related duties as requested by the Director of Legal Affairs

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE:

  • LL. B / JD

  • Member in good standing of the Ontario Bar.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in life and disability insurance law.

  • Autonomy in all stages of file management.

  • Analytical, organizational, time and priority management skills, thoroughness, patience and team spirit.

  • Excellent command of the English language (oral and written) with editorial skills.

  • Good command in French an asset.

  • Experience in contract negotiations as well previous experience as an in-house lawyer/counsel an asset.
