Job Details:

Mercer University is searching for an Assistant Bursar (Student Account Services) for the Macon, Georgia campus.


 

Responsibilities:

The Assistant Bursar (Student Account Services) assists the Senior Assistant Bursar and Associate Bursar in managing student accounts receivables across all campuses, with a focus on monitoring and supporting collections efforts. This role ensures that business practices align with the institution's mission and strategic plan. The Assistant Bursar sets a high standard for integrity, fairness, and respect, fostering trust through open communication and addressing issues directly and constructively. The position requires strong customer service skills, as it plays a key role in interfacing with students and other departments to ensure account accuracy, streamline processes, and resolve issues. Additionally, the Assistant Bursar oversees the staff’s adherence to the collection cycle, contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Bursar's Office.

Duties include:

  • Assists as needed in the transfer of delinquent account balances to the Student Loans Office. 

  • Authorize Account Balance Deferments to allow future term registration within limits and policy. 

  • Incumbent will assist with the review of accounts to discern unusual issues (such as incorrect: status, classification, registration, billing method, term or enrollment selection, financial aid issues, system issues, or other issues). These duties will require familiarity with various billing methods, pending financial aid, enrollment requirements, and special student groups. 

  • Ability to make sound judgments and determine corrective course of action. Requires logical, analytical review, application of policy and regulations, and ability to apply knowledge to varying situations. Includes talking to students/parents to resolve an issue or notify of correction. 

Qualifications:

With a bachelor's degree, two years of related experience is required, which must include handling cash deposits, financial reconciliations, accounts receivables, customer service, and problem resolution. In lieu of a degree, an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience will be considered.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and email required to perform all facets of position. Knowledge of CampusVue a definite advantage. 

  • Knowledge and background in receivables management necessary in order to meet the University’s goal to reduce receivables and increase cash flow. 

  • Ability to maintain accounting records for funds, programs involving multiple transactions; compile, verify and reconcile financial data; prepare statistical and financial reports; research and resolve errors and discrepancies; read and interpret computer generated reports.

  • Skill in multi-tasking and prioritizing absolute necessity.

  • Effective written and oral interpersonal and communication skills, knowledge of business management principles, methods and procedures. 

  • Ability to speak well in meetings and represent the department and University in a professional capacity.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to work with representatives from public and private entities and handle potentially sensitive situations.

  • Ability to handle difficult people with graciousness on a consistent basis.
