The opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Communications & Engagement Executive to join the Markel team in London. The Communication & Engagement (C&E) team manages internal communications, employee engagement initiatives and provides project support within Markel Wholesale to ensure the division has the tools, information, and resources it needs to perform at its best.

This role will assist the Senior Manager of Communication & Engagement in driving internal communications and employee engagement initiatives throughout the business, encompassing over 400 employees globally. In this team of two, you'll play a pivotal role in delivering the communication and engagement strategy, with extensive opportunities to participate in a variety of activities and influence the output of this function. You will also work closely with a wide range of partners, especially the international brand and communications teams, marketing, HR, Talent Development, IT Delivery, PA and Secretarial, and will engage frequently with senior leadership.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the wholesale communication and engagement function

  • Lead on the creation and distribution of the monthly divisional newsletter

  • Manage the logistics and collation of content for quarterly divisional town hall meetings

  • Design, implement, and analyse surveys to gauge employee sentiment, utilising insights to drive engagement strategies

  • Maintain and analyse communication analytics and engagement stats, taking ownership of monthly reporting and insights

  • Develop and prepare presentations, reports, and other communication materials as required

  • Ensure excellent governance of all wholesale internal communication channels, including emails, Teams channels, SharePoint sites, and the intranet. Proactively manage content, maintain updated contact lists, and oversee the team calendar

  • Provide strategic support for the governance of SharePoint sites across the wholesale business, advising teams on the creation of divisional sites

  • Innovate and oversee employee events and engagement activities, such as happy hours, focus groups, and networking opportunities

  • Supervise the onboarding process for new joiners, guaranteeing a smooth and welcoming integration into the company

  • Identify and implement improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the communication and engagement function, leading change management efforts to integrate new practices

  • Collaborate with the talent development team to facilitate training opportunities, aligning them with managerial and team development needs

Our must haves:

  • Expertise in copywriting and editing: Possessing advanced skills in crafting and refining content, with the ability to simplify complex technical information into clear, accessible language

  • Design Savvy: A keen eye for aesthetic design, ensuring brand consistency and visual appeal across diverse formats

  • Attention to detail: Consistently able to deliver work that is high-quality, thorough, and accurate across all communication channels

  • Relationship building: Proven ability to forge and maintain strong connections with a broad range of global partners, including senior leadership

  • Project management: Robust organisational skills paired with a track record of managing projects efficiently and effectively

  • IT proficiency: Strong command of MS Office suite, with a comprehensive understanding of internal systems. Familiarity with MS Teams and SharePoint is highly beneficial

  • Diversity and inclusion:  Knowledge of diversity and inclusion practices, with the capability to embed these values into events and communications, promoting an inclusive workplace

  • Proactive and creative attitude: An innovative approach to problem-solving and role execution

  • Discretion and confidentiality: Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with the utmost discretion

  • Industry experience: Background in insurance or financial services is advantageous but not mandatory

  • Self starter, proactive with the ability to use your own initiative and bring your own ideas to the table
