The Property and Inland Marine Division is looking for a Cargo Claims Representative to join their team! Great American’s culture is built on connection, shared learning, and strong relationships. To support this, employees in this role are expected to be on-site four days a week, with the flexibility to work one day remotely. Core in‑office days are Tuesday–Thursday, with the fourth day determined by business needs.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

  • Investigates and maintains motor truck cargo claims:
    • Reviews and evaluates coverage and liability.
    • Secures and analyzes necessary information (i.e., contracts, policies, shipping documentation, releases, statements, damage surveys and reports, or other documents) in the investigation of claims.
  • Works toward the resolution of cargo claims, and may attend inspections, mediations, depositions or trials as necessary.
  • Navigates contractual relationships between motor carriers, freight brokers, freight forwarders and other motor carriers
  • Utilizes a basic understanding of Carmack, COGSA and Montreal legal concepts in the disposition of cargo claims.
  • May affect settlements/reserves within prescribed limits and submit recommendations to supervisor on cases exceeding personal authority.
  • Conveys moderately complex information (coverage, decisions, outcomes, etc.) to all appropriate parties, maintaining a professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Ensures that claims payments are issued in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ensures that claims handling is conducted in compliance with applicable statutes, regulations and other legal requirements, and that all applicable company procedures and policies are followed.
  • May provide guidance and assistance to lower level positions and other functional areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent transportation experience.
  • Field of Study: Liberal Arts, Business or a related discipline.
  • Experience: Generally, 1 to 5 years of related experience.
