The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Makerspace Innovation and Business Advisor, UNLV Small Business Development Administrative [R0143262]

ROLE of the POSITIONS

The Makerspace Innovation and Business Advisor will be housed within the Office of Economic Development (OED). Programs within OED focus on technology and business development, industry engagement, entrepreneurship, research, and sports innovation.

The Makerspace Innovation and Business Advisor maintains and oversees the education, training, operations and program activities for the Makerspace at Black Fire Innovation, a "for fee" facility which is under the jurisdiction of the Office of Economic Development and is located at the Harry Reid Research & Technology Park. The Makerspace Innovation and Business Coordinator collaborates with, and assists small businesses, startups, entrepreneurs, community members, and campus colleagues (faculty and students), and supports the growing user base of "for fee" makerspace services.

Under the direction of the Director of Small Business Development, the Makerspace Innovation and Business Advisor will be responsible for maintaining policies, business development, asset management, safety and compliance, marketing, educational programs and continued growth and funding of the makerspace.

In addition, reporting to the Director of Small Business Development, the Makerspace Innovation and Business Advisor will assist small clients with counseling, education and development and will work in tandem with the UNLV Office of Economic Development and other programs. The Advisor will be responsible for contributing to business starts, the creation of jobs, and capital formation for clients. The Advisor assists in all aspects of owning, managing, and operating a small business and includes those that are experiencing difficulties. The Advisor provides expertise for the purpose of business survival and job retention. This position is responsible for specific client outcomes as designated by the Office of Economic Development.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, or related field plus preference for 1-3 years of similar experience. 

Credentials must be obtained prior to the start date.

KNOWLEDGE

Required

  • Experience working in a makerspace.
  • Knowledge of utilizing technology to advance the needs of small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs.
  • Knowledge and usage of standard Makerspace software programs and equipment
  • Knowledge of vector graphic editors, large format printers
  • Experience with circuitry, and Raspberry Pi single-board computers
  • Strong understanding of the needs of small business owners
  • Government agencies – specifically educational institutions and development authorities
  • Non-profit and service groups and business organizations in region.
  • Client development, business plan development, funding development and program development
  • Business budgeting, funding, forecasting, and taxation processes

   

Preferred

  • Preference for candidate with experience working in a university managed makerspace.

SKILLS

Required

  • Experience with 3D modeling and printing equipment, software, and advanced CAD skills
  • Demonstrated ability to train a team of student interns
  • Excellent oral, and written communication skills, including the ability to describe complex concept to a non-technical audience
  • Demonstrated ability to educate small business owners, entrepreneurs, and startups on ways to creatively utilize the Makerspace
  • Minimum of two years demonstrated experience utilizing a CNC router, laser cutter, 3D printers and related software
  • Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email), specifically word processing, spreadsheet development, database management, networks, e-commerce

Required

  • Ability to engage with small business owners, entrepreneurs, and startups to support the recovery from COVID-19
  • Ability to maintain a "for fee" makerspace
  • Ability to maintain policies and procedures, including training and safety materials/guides for Makerspace equipment
  • Ability to maintain and troubleshoot fabrication equipment and software
  • Ability to research additional funding opportunities and participate in proposal development and submission.
  • Demonstrated experience tracking metrics related to small business clients in department utilized databases.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, creatively, and effectively to promote teamwork. Work and interact with various authority levels and diverse populations
  • Must meet milestones and metrics established by the institution and funding authority
  • Provide short and long-term “one-on-one” counseling to entrepreneurs in a number of diverse business settings (ie., marketing, market research, market feasibility assessment, development of business plans, financial data analysis, capital formation assistance, business skill assessment
  • Develop credibility, establish rapport, and formulate partnerships with diverse populations that result in collaborative efforts, and sustain effective cooperative working relationships
  • Plan and deliver impactful training workshops that help small business owners succeed
