ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The purpose of the role is to consistently deliver high quality legal services to the CFD and Stockbroking business of CMC Markets in Singapore, and from time-to-time other businesses within the APAC region.

  • Assisting Head of Legal (UK) and the wider Senior Management team to deliver the Group’s objectives.
  • Line management responsibility for paralegals, trainees and legal counsels engaged by the Legal Team.  Carrying out 1-2-1 catchups and appraisals (on an informal basis and, where required, formal basis). 
  • Assisting with drafting the monthly board report and accompanying documentation.
  • Liaising with Global Legal Team to ensure important information is shared.
  • Assisting with the provision of invoicing and budgeting information to the Finance Team.   
  • Assisting the Tax team with engagement letters and other work as required.
  • Assisting the Finance / Treasury team with loans, engagement letters and other financing arrangements (such as facility agreements).
  • Assisting with Prime Brokerage documentation, including ISDA documentation.
  • Assisting Compliance with complaints (where required), financial promotions regulatory issues and rule changes that may affect CMC’s terms of business.
  • Assisting the Operations Team with any project work relating to retail and corporate applications.
  • Assisting CMC’s Partners and institutional business including the management and updating of global legal advice and due diligence. This will also involve negotiation of agreements with 3rd parties.
  • Assist Marketing with ad-hoc agreements and reviewing marketing content.
  • Drafting and amending Terms of Business for our Next Generation platform globally, ensuring compliance with both local regulation and law.
  • Assisting with the expansion of Singapore business and cross border considerations, such as new branch openings, and new product offerings
  • IP and IT projects and transactions, market data licences (including negotiation with exchanges) renewals, SOWs.
  • To provide best practice legal and transaction management support and advice to CMC businesses and to manage external legal advisers for value and to best effect.
  • To mitigate legal risk to the fullest extent possible and to safeguard the best interests and reputation of CMC Markets at all times.

Principle Accountabilities

  • To provide legal and transaction management support and advice to specific Singapore businesses and functions.
  • To ensure that legal risk is mitigated to the fullest extent possible and that legal issues are at all times addressed in accordance with best practice.
  • To manage external advisers to best effect, keeping costs to a minimum without compromising the quality of legal advice received.  Monitoring the level of service provided and maintaining a record for future reference.
  • To provide general legal support and advice to CMC businesses and other support and control functions as required on a case-by-case basis.
  • To have a thorough understanding of the financial services industry and the issues and legal developments that relate to CMC’s business.
  • To foster an inclusive environment within the workplace.

KEY SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Practicing solicitor qualified in Singapore, with a minimum of 8 years’ post qualification experience.
  • Experience and knowledge in local laws is required. Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate complex legal issues in a concise manner.
  • Excellent organisation, analytical and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work well autonomously and as part of the team, assuming managerial responsibilities where appropriate.
  • Solid understanding of the laws and regulations that cover the financial services industry.  

Desirable

  • A Singapore qualified lawyer, but lawyers from other jurisdictions with extensive experience of Singapore laws and regulations will be considered.
  • General corporate and commercial experience required. Experience in the financial services industry preferred but not essential.
  • CFD and/or stockbroking product knowledge an advantage, but not required.
