Job Description

GPLA, part of the DPR Family of Companies, is seeking an Assistant Project Manager in Baltimore, Maryland. This position provides support to the Structural Project Manager in overseeing and managing construction projects, focusing on structural elements. This role involves assisting in coordinating tasks, supporting decision-making processes, and overseeing specific aspects of the project. While the Assistant Project Manager has a lower level of responsibility compared to the Structural Project Manager, they play a crucial role in ensuring compliance with specifications, safety standards, and project delivery within budget and time constraints. Responsibilities will include but may not be limited to the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project Coordination: Assist in coordinating and overseeing various aspects of the construction project, including scheduling, resource allocation, and material procurement.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Prepare and maintain project documentation, such as project plans, progress reports, meeting minutes, and budget updates.

  • Design and Specification Support: Assist in reviewing and interpreting structural designs and specifications to ensure compliance with project requirements and applicable codes and standards.

  • Construction Oversight: Support the inspection and monitoring of construction activities to ensure compliance with approved plans, specifications, and safety regulations.

  • Stakeholder Communication: Assist in facilitating effective communication and collaboration among project stakeholders, including clients, contractors, architects, and other engineering disciplines.

  • Budget and Cost Control: Assist in monitoring project costs, tracking expenses, and supporting the management of the project budget.

  • Quality Assurance: Collaborate with the project team to ensure that quality standards are met throughout the construction process, conducting inspections and addressing any non-compliance issues.

  • Risk Management: Assist in identifying and evaluating potential risks and assisting in the development and implementation of risk mitigation strategies.

  • Change Management: Support the process of reviewing and managing change orders and modifications to the project scope, schedule, or budget.

  • Professional Development: Stay updated with industry trends, codes, and regulations, and actively participate in professional development activities to enhance skills and knowledge in structural engineering and project management.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Structural Engineering Knowledge: A solid understanding of structural engineering principles, codes, and standards is essential. This includes knowledge of various construction materials, structural analysis, and design principles.

  • Project Management: Proficiency in project management methodologies and techniques is important. This includes skills in planning, organizing, and coordinating construction projects, as well as resource and time management.

  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are crucial for effective collaboration and communication with project stakeholders, including clients, contractors, and other team members. This includes the ability to convey technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Problem-Solving: The ability to identify and analyze problems, propose solutions, and make informed decisions is important. This includes critical thinking skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise during the construction process.

  • Attention to Detail: A keen eye for detail is necessary to ensure accuracy and quality in reviewing design plans, specifications, and construction documentation. It also helps in identifying potential risks or discrepancies in the project.

  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills are crucial to effectively manage project documentation, schedules, and resources. This includes the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment.

  • Teamwork and Collaboration: The ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse stakeholders is important. This includes active listening, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.

  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in relevant software and tools used in structural engineering and project management, such as computer-aided design (CAD) software, project scheduling software, and document management systems, can be advantageous.

  • Financial and Budget Management: Basic knowledge of financial and budget management principles is beneficial. This includes the ability to track project costs, monitor budgets, and contribute to cost-effective decision-making.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in structural engineering.

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

  • Experience in structural analysis, structural design, construction management, project management, and building codes and regulations.

  • Strong proficiency with Tekla, AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, ETABS, and STAAD.Pro.

  • A commitment to ongoing learning and professional development is important. This can involve attending workshops, seminars, and industry conferences to stay updated with the latest advancements and best practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
