Engineer II, Solar Materials & Processes (GAF Energy LLC, San Jose, CA)

Collaborate and assist in developing materials and manufacturing processes for building-integrated photovoltaic (“BIPV”) roofing. Facilitate the design of product and manufacturing process for the next generation of solar roofs working cross-functionally to support the development of materials of construction and manufacturing processes. Support the manufacturing process development, from proof-of-concept prototyping and process modeling, through acceptance testing of major equipment. Processes may include extrusion, lamination, adhesive dispensing, compounding, automation integration, printing, soldering, surface activation, bonding and more. Designate, evaluate and down-select major manufacturing hardware, designing for economy, capacity and flow, for both single-product and mixed model lines. Author and execute Requests for Information, Proposal and Quotation. Execute the Acceptance Test Procedures and First Article Plans to establish and support Quality and SPC goals. Support the manufacturing process for current and anticipated products and contribute to designing both materials and processes for GAF-E’s factory of the future. Use strong communication skills (written and verbal) to collaborate with the team in the development of material formulation development, applying knowledge of solar, polymeric, inorganic, functional additive and adhesive materials to both solar performance and manufacturability. Propagate Design for Manufacture/Quality principles throughout the enterprise. Work hands-on in both the laboratory and on the manufacturing floor, to develop and verify products and processes. Domestic travel required 5% of the time to visit plant sites and interact with suppliers. Telecommuting may be permitted. When not telecommuting, must report to 5981 Optical Ct, San Jose, CA 95138. Salary: $130,000 - $145,000 per year.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree or U.S. equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, plus 3 years of professional experience as Process Engineer, Solar Materials Engineer, or any occupation/position/job title involving manufacturing engineering. In lieu of a Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of experience, the employer will accept a Master’s degree or U.S. equivalent in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field, plus 1 year of professional experience as Process Engineer, Solar Materials Engineer, or any occupation/position/job title involving manufacturing engineering.

Must also have experience in the following: 1 year of professional experience performing hands on manufacturing engineering, including process design and optimization, and process equipment specification and installation; 1 year of professional experience performing R&D product development and concurrent engineering from conception through transfer-to-manufacture; 1 year of professional experience with polymer, solar, glass or asphalt manufacturing; and 1 year of professional experience working in a laboratory at a facility with DoE/ANOVA.
