Description

The Corporate division encompasses the core operational support for all Land O’Lakes businesses. It includes Corporate Strategy, Corporate Communications, Land O’Lakes Foundation and Community Relations, Finance, Law, Member Relations, Facilities, Event Strategy, Security, Human Resources, Information Technology, Corporate Marketing and Government Relations.

Position Purpose:

This specialist role is part of a collaborative legal team that supports the Company’s business groups across the organization.  This role will provide legal advice and guidance on data security and privacy related matters, including contract review and negotiation. The role will also support the Company’s business ethics and compliance programs, including in the areas of third party risk management, code of conduct policy analysis.  Primary focuses in compliance will include third party risk management and analysis, including those related to third party risk management, code of conduct policy administration, adherence and training. Within the privacy role, the position will support increasing demand for legal and operational advice and guidance on global privacy and security matters. The role will provide pragmatic advice on day- to-day compliance matters and will work closely with cross functional teams in IT to advance the overall data protection and privacy programs of the company. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate brings meaningful hands-on experience that demonstrates understanding, skilled advising and strategic understanding of data and privacy regulations within the U.S., Canada, and other countries of operation. Notable experience reviewing and negotiating privacy related contract provisions, including data processing agreements, is required. The role is expected to stay abreast of privacy related developments in the law and to provide proactive guidance on best practices for meeting changes in this legal area.

  • In addition to legal responsibilities associated with privacy law compliance, the role will also support the company’s corporate compliance programs. Familiarity and experience with managing/advising on code of conduct matters, third party and risk management, anti-bribery/anti-corruption, conflicts of interest and related subjects is a strong plus.

Qualifications:

Experience-Education (Required): 

  • J.D. from accredited law school; strong academic credentials Membership in at least one state bar; licensed or willingness to become licensed in Minnesota
  •  6 or more years of legal experience advising in the data privacy and information security space; including California Consumer Privacy Act, GDPR, PIPEDA and other Canadian privacy laws, and other regional and state-specific data security and privacy laws
  • Experience with compliance Contract review and negotiation skills in the areas of data security and privacy, data ownership, anti-corruption/anti-bribery standards
  • Excellent writing, analysis, and communication skills
  • Experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating data security and privacy related provisions in contracts, including contracts on third-party paper
  • Drafting external privacy notices and internal privacy policies

Competencies and skills (required):

  • Ability to analyze and articulate legal concepts and other complex issues to a variety of audiences
  • Capacity to learn new concepts or areas of law; critical thinking skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail as well as capability to timely and successfully manage multiple competing priorities
  • SPECIFICS Regarding Privacy law competencies/Strong understanding of data protection principles, information security best practices, and relevant risk management frameworks

Competencies-Skills (Preferred):

  • Project management familiarity
  • Willingness to embrace changing technologies used in provision of legal work and project support
  • Familiarity with compliance programming related to policies in corporate codes of conduct and related enterprise risk management, including third party risk reviews
