Job Posting Title:

Product Development Data Engineer

Req ID:

Job Description:

Technology is at the heart of Disney’s past, present, and future. Disney Entertainment and ESPN Product & Technology is a global organization of engineers, product developers, designers, technologists, data scientists, and more – all working to build and advance the technological backbone for Disney’s media business globally.

The team marries technology with creativity to build world-class products, enhance storytelling, and drive velocity, innovation, and scalability for our businesses. We are Storytellers and Innovators. Creators and Builders. Entertainers and Engineers. We work with every part of The Walt Disney Company’s media portfolio to advance the technological foundation and consumer media touch points serving millions of people around the world.

Here are a few reasons why we think you’d love working here:

  • Building the future of Disney’s media: Our Technologists are designing and building the products and platforms that will power our media, advertising, and distribution businesses for years to come.
  • Reach, Scale & Impact: More than ever, Disney’s technology and products serve as a signature doorway for fans' connections with the company’s brands and stories. Disney+. Hulu. ESPN. ABC. ABC News…and many more. These products and brands – and the unmatched stories, storytellers, and events they carry – matter to millions of people globally.
  • Innovation: We develop and implement groundbreaking products and techniques that shape industry norms, and solve complex and distinctive technical problems.

Role Overview

We’re hiring Data Engineers across all experience levels—including individual contributors and technical leaders—who are excited to design and build new data products and systems that power next‑generation storytelling, personalization, insights, and intelligent experiences across Disney. In this role, you’ll work on greenfield architectures, novel data flows, and high‑impact data capabilities that expand what’s possible for our consumer products and internal platforms.

Instead of maintaining legacy pipelines, you’ll focus on creating new data systems from the ground up—tackling ambiguous, complex technical challenges and shaping foundational datasets, patterns, and services for emerging product use cases. Depending on level, you may deliver end‑to‑end data products, define domain‑level architecture, or drive multi‑team technical strategy and mentorship.

*Throughout the recruitment process we will evaluate your skills and experience to determine level placement

Responsibilities

  • Architect and develop new data products and systems, transforming raw and event‑driven data into scalable capabilities that support future‑focused product features, analytics, and machine learning.
  • Design and implement greenfield batch and streaming pipelines, enabling real‑time decisioning, ML‑powered experiences, and high‑performance distributed data flows.
  • Solve complex, undefined data challenges, including large‑scale ingestion, event/contract design, storage modeling, latency optimization, and resilience for new product initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with product, engineering, and analytics teams to translate opportunity spaces into well‑designed, production‑ready data solutions that unlock new consumer and business experiences.
  • Define data architecture patterns, standards, and best practices for schema design, lineage, governance, and performance across emerging domains and platforms.
  • Prototype and evaluate new approaches and technologies, experimenting with modern frameworks and tools to accelerate innovation and improve development velocity.
  • Implement future‑friendly data quality and observability capabilities, ensuring transparency, monitoring, and trust as systems evolve and scale.
  • Contribute to technical design reviews and architectural strategy; depending on level, mentor engineers and influence multi‑team decision‑making.
  • Work within an Agile, iterative environment, validating assumptions, testing concepts, and delivering incremental value throughout the product development lifecycle.

Basic Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field—or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go, Scala, TypeScript/JavaScript, C#).
  • Strong SQL skills and familiarity with data modeling, schema design, and data‑centric architectural fundamentals.
  • Experience building data pipelines, backend systems, or distributed data services, including integration with APIs (REST, gRPC, GraphQL, or event‑driven architectures).
  • Familiarity with cloud data ecosystems and compute engines (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Spark/Databricks, Flink, Kafka, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of data persistence patterns (relational, NoSQL), caching strategies, and storage/compute tradeoffs.
  • Comfort with Git‑based workflows, CI/CD practices, testing, code reviews, and documentation.
  • Strong communication skills, collaborative mindset, and attention to detail; ability to work effectively in Agile/iterative development environments.
