The primary function of this position is the production of an underwriting profit through the generation of new business opportunities. The CL Field Underwriter will focus and budget their time to being in strategically selected agencies with the focus on evaluating, quoting and proposing new business accounts. The Field Underwriter will align with our agents’ marketing teams and producers in developing a strong pipeline of new business opportunities and, working within their binding and quoting authority, provide new business quotes.

The Field Underwriter will have authority levels to allow for quoting and binding new accounts while at the offices of our agents. The building of strong business partnerships throughout the agency (principals, producers, marketing staff, and account managers) is critical to this position. The position is responsible for continually developing new business submissions and written premium in accordance with the company's underwriting practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Travel to assigned agents on a regular basis to underwrite, quote and bind new business. Travel will average 3 days per week.

  • Demonstrates skill in risk analysis, negotiation, and proposing terms and pricing to procure a profitable book of commercial lines business.

  • Evaluates new business opportunities and makes profitable, individual risk judgments based on thorough understanding of Arbella’s underwriting philosophies and guidelines. 

  • Activities will include agency in-office quoting, quote presentations, loss control visits and communicating Arbella’s appetite and products to producers and marketing staffs.

  • Works closely with our Territory Marketing Managers to ensure consistent messaging to agencies.

  • Continually assesses the capabilities and strengths of our agencies as well as fit for the role of the Field Underwriter.

  • Management of New Business/Prospect opportunities to ensure we maintain a sufficient pipeline to ensure new business volume success

Key Requirements:

  • New Business Premium Volume that supports our business objectives, Development of strategic agency relationships and, on an as needed basis, assists with renewals.

  • Excellent relationship building, communication and service experience required.
